The complete three volumes of Clement Marot's works. With a portrait frontispiece of Marot to volume I. In the original French. Clement Marot was a French poet of the Renaissance era. He began his career in the time of the Rhetoriqueurs poets who combined stilted language with a fondness for the allegorical manner of the 15th century. Clement began as a rhetoriqueur although later helped overthrow that style. He wrote many panegyrics. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally smart. Very minor rubbing to the extremities. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. pp192-193 of volume II show some staining. Prior owner's signature and drawing to the title pages of all volumes. Clément Marot fait ses débuts de poète avec Le Temple de Cupido 1514 recueil dans le prolongement de la grande rhétorique et de la poésie médiévale. Dès 1519 il entre au service de Marguerite d'Angoulême et écrit pour la maison d'Alençon l'Epistre du camp d'Attigny. Acquis à l'évangélisme du groupe de Meaux il est dénoncé et emprisonné au Châtelet pour avoir mangé du lard en carême. Il compose alors L'Épîstre à son ami Lyon et une satire de la justice L'Enfer. Valet de chambre du roi chroniqueur brillant et insolent aussi à l'aise dans le lyrisme que dans la satire Il donne en 1532 L'Adolescence Clementine qui connaît un immense succès et fait de son auteur l'un des plus célèbres poètes de son temps. Mais l'affaire des Placards 1534 oblige Marot à fuir. Réfugié auprès de Marguerite puis à Ferrare et enfin à Venise il accepte d'abjurer "l'erreur luthérienne" pour retrouver la Cour. C'est l'époque de la querelle avec Sagon celle aussi où Marot entreprend la traduction des Psaumes Trente Psaumes. Mais François Ier radicalise alors sa politique religieuse et Les Psaumes sont mis à l'index . Marot trouvera refuge à Genève avant de mourir à Turin. Écarté par La Pléiade Marot sera ressuscité au siècle suivant par Voiture et plus tard La Fontaine. unknown
