Os seus <em>Contes moraux</em> 1761; 'Histórias Morais' são mais originais. Publicou-os pela primeira vez separadamente no Mercure de France do qual foi editor entre 1758 e 1760. Sentimentais edificantes e superficialmente elegantes em conteúdo e estilo estes contos foram amplamente apreciados e imitados.</p>_x000d_<p>A publicação de dois romances filosóficos <em>Bélisaire</em> 1767 e <em>Les Incas</em> 1777 melhorou consideravelmente a sua reputação. Ce roman politique et moral eut un grand retentissement grâce aux points de vue qu'il apportait sur les problèmes soulevés par le Siècle des Lumières et notamment celui de la tolérance religieuse. Le chapitre XV est pour cette raison resté célèbre. Il fut même traduit en russe par l'impératrice Catherine II que ses idées novatrices intéressaient. L'illustration se compose d'un frontispice et de 3 planches hors-texte dessinés par Gravelot. Très rare exemplaire réimposé au format in-8 sur grand papier de Hollande. Quelques taches et salissures. Engraved frontispieces of Marmontel and Voltaire. A memoir by the French historian and writer who was also member of the Encyclopedistes movement notable for developing the Encyclopedie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Marmontel contributed a series of articles thereto served as a patron to Madame de Pompadour and was named historiographer of France 1771 secretary to the Academy 1783 and professor of history in the Lycee 1786. First published in 1804 in four volumes his memoirs remain of great importance to literary historians. They include a picturesque review of his life a literary history of two important reigns a great gallery of portraits extending from the venerable Jean Baptiste Massillon to Honore Mirabeau. The book was nominally written for the instruction of his children. It contains an exquisite picture of his own childhood in the Limousin; its value for the literary historian is great.
