NB: this half-sheet is original and does not represent an excision as can been seen from the old offsetting of the final page of text. Overall in very good condition. AN EARLY AMERICAN PRINTING OF A WORK OF FICTION; OUR COPY WAS OWNED BY A YOUNG WOMAN OR WOMAN BY AT LEAST 1803. THIS NEWBURYPORT EDITION OF THE NOVEL IS UNCOMMON.

At a time when women were denied the rights of citizenship the text of Marmontel's "Belisarius" was of particular interest to some contemporary feminist authors and activists some of whom utilized its plots to champion human rights as is attested by the 1795 New York play written by Margaretta Faugeres entitled "Belisarius: A Tragedy."

The first blank leaf is inscribed "Eliza Gage 1803." This may have been Eliza Gage of Newburyport who was born in 1790 to Jonathan Gage and Susanna Jewett.

The present translation follows that of the bilingual text given in the Brussels 1792 edition although no Translator's Preface appears therein. However there is one in the present edition and it seems to have been written by an American. The final sentence reads: "What will still raise your surprise to a great height is to find an author possessed of so strong a sense of liberty born under the French government: he has been since sent to the Bastile as a reward for his most excellent performance."

A copy of this Newburyport edition was listed among the fiction books in the Caritat Circulating Library in 1804 for which see G.G. Raddin An Early New York Library of Fiction 1940 p. 82.

Evans 30737. ESTC W4099. Printed by William Barrett (for Thomas & Andrews, Boston) unknown

Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated.

The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers:

"'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century." On the titlepage a pruple stamp of former owner ""G.W.B.D."" probably Gräflich von Waldbott-Bassenheim'sche Domanialverwaltung.Belisaire is a banned French novel about the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius by Jean- Francois Marmontel. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch.A plea for religious tolerance. Marmontel condemned the violence against the native Americans indigenous people. This plea was not suited in the time of the French monarchy during the ancien regime based on intolerance and intimidation. The archbishop of Paris Mgr. Chrisophe de Beaumont banned the work of Marmontel in 1767. Also in The Netherlands there was a vivid dispute this time on the idea that also non-christians heidenen could join in heaven. This is called the ""Socratische oorlog"".Jean Francois Marmontel 1723-1799 was a French historian writer and member of the Encyclopedistes movement. In 1772 he became the official historian of France historiographe de France. He worked with Alembert Helvétius d'Holbach Condillac Turgot Buffon Condorcet and Voltaire. The book was reprinted in 1787 by the Bibliotheque amusante.Boekverboden - forbidden books - banned book - omstreden schrijver - tegenstander van Rousseau - pleidooi voor religieuze tolerantie - plea for religious tolerance unknown
