After studying with the Jesuits and teaching in their colleges at Clermont and Toulouse Marmontel 1723-1799 acting on the advice of Voltaire set out for Paris at the age of twenty-two to seek literary fame. He wrote a series of minor plays which brought him somewhat permanent admission to Parisian literary and social circles. It was during this time that he wrote articles for the 'Encyclopedie' on the 'Elements of Literature' which still rank among the French classics. In 1758 he gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour. She obtained for him a place as a civil servant and the management of the journal 'Le Mercure' where his charming 'Contes Moraux' were first printed. First published in 1767 'Belisare' was a historical romance loosely based on the career of Belisarius 505-565 a Byzantine general under the Emperor Justinian I. He was constantly called upon to defend a fading empire and the very gates of Rome against the Persians Vandals Goths Ostrogoths and Huns. It included a chapter on religious toleration which incurred the censure of the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris. Because of this reaction to his work Marmontel became even more firmly set against the excesses of religious and political fanaticism. Quite scarce. FRENCH 4 Language: eng. Hardcover. Very Good. #[66368]Amsterdam Pieter Meijer 1768 8vo. original marbled paper boards 283244 pp. worn boards and spine with faded marbling loosened binding clear printwork uncut pages frontispiece and two more engravings by Gravelot 1699-1773. l 2nd edition. The original French Bélisaire is a banned 1767 novel on the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius by Jean-François Marmontel 1723-1799. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch. In the Netherlands the translation was received with enthousiasm as well as protest and resulted in a fierce discussion about whether heathens like Socrates could find a place in Heaven. hardcover

Belisarius despite his successes is reduced to poverty by Justinian serving as an apocraphal tale and an allegory for the arrogance of contemporary French King Louis XV. A notable chapter in this book promoting religious tolerance incured the censure of the Archbishop of Paris.
