1767684P4Paris: Merlin 1767. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4". Not Stated. The original French first edition of Jean-Francois Marmonetal's controversial and banned novel on the life of Belisarius illustrated. The first edition of this work. In the original French. Illustrated with a frontispiece and three plates. Collated complete. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. 'Belisaire' is a French novel about the life of Belisarius a Byzantine general. This novel popularised the fictitious tale of Belisarius being reduced to a beggar by Justinian I despite his great services to the Empire throughout his life. Marmontel uses that tale to show an example of the monarchy and its ingratitude towards their faithful servants indicating that Louis XV was another ungrateful monarch. This is an interesting viewpoint as this book was written only twenty years before the uprising of the French Revolution. This novel was banned when it was published by the Sorbonne because chapter XV extols religious tolerance. Written by Jean-Francois Marmontel a French historian and member of the Encyclopedistes movement. He gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour gaining a place as a civil servant and the management of the official journal 'La Mercure'. In the original calf binding. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing and marking to the boards and spine. Some loss to the head and tail of the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Small cracks to the head and tail of the joints. Hinges are starting but firm. Front endpaper frontispiece and title page are working loose and may detach. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Small closed tear to leaf a1 no loss. Very Good Merlin hardcover

1773LTH28-D-19London: P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. An attractive copy of Jean-Francois Marmontel historical work on the life and times of the Byzantine military leader Belisarius. Translated into English from the original French. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lycée in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambré Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown.Entitled 'Belisaire' in the original French the work was incredibly controversial. The work made bold comparisons between Belisarius' decline into poverty at the hand of his king Justinian I and the then current French monarch Louis XV and his treatment of his people. Furthermore the French ecclesiastical authorities were angered by the works perpetuation of the the virtues of religious tolerance. These factors resulted in the work being banned in France. Not only a interesting history of this Byzantine military leader this work is also valuable as it touches upon the political climate of 18th century France. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Very Good Indeed P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover
