First printings identified via the presence of errata to the tail of the contents leaves.A lovely edition of the moral tales of Marmontel which are celebrated for their depiction of French society under King Louis XV.Illustrated with a frontispiece to volume I an engraved title page to each volume nine further plates to volume I and five further plates to volume III.Collated complete.With a half title to each volume. In a full calf binding with gilt detailing to back strip. Externally excellent. Volume I hinges strained but firmly held. Internally firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned with only the odd spot. Pages 317-320 have been misbound after page 324 to volume I. Illustrated throughout with twenty three plates across all volumes as well as engraved title pages. Collated complete. Volume III is the only volume to have a title page with publication details. From the library of Sir Richard Paul Jodrell 1745-1831 a classical scholar and playwright. Jodrell's bookplate is to the front pastedown of all volumes and his signature is to the recto of the front endpapers. Mermontel's Contes Moraux were a famous series. The appreciation for this work was due to the delicate finish of the style but mainly in the graphic and charming pictures of French society under King Louis XV. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally very smart with small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of spines. Minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Handling marks to boards. Bookplate of previous owner to front pastedown of all volumes Sir Richard Paul Jodrell. His signature to the recto of front endpapers to all volumes. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots throughout. Frequent marginal annotations and some notes to endpapers by prior owner light and not affecting text. Small ink spills to page 313-16 to volume I. Very Good Chez Merlin hardcover

Compôs tragédias à maneira de Voltaire e libretos de óperas para os compositores Jean-Philippe Rameau André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry Niccolò Piccinni e Luigi Cherubini. Os seus <em>Contes moraux</em> 1761; "Histórias Morais" são mais originais. Publicou-os pela primeira vez separadamente no Mercure de France do qual foi editor entre 1758 e 1760. Sentimentais edificantes e superficialmente elegantes em conteúdo e estilo estes contos foram amplamente apreciados e imitados.</p>_x000d_<p>A publicação de dois romances filosóficos <em>Bélisaire</em> 1767 e <em>Les Incas</em> 1777 melhorou consideravelmente a sua reputação.
