Paris: 1780.
Profusely illustrated with engraved plates.
Diderot's famous Encyclopedie was initially a modest translation of Chambers's Cyclopaedia. It grew as a project into a massive project which attempted to collect human knowledge from a rationalistic perspective instead of by nature or theology. In organizing knowledge from a position where human reason was paramount the supremacy of the Church was imperiled. As a result the Encyclopedie was widely controversial and placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum by the Catholic Church. In discussing fundamental philosophical issues such as on political authority and natural rights articles in the Encyclopedie shifted the basis of governmental authority from the divine right of Kings to radical concepts popular consent was the basis of legitimacy and the ideals of a social contract. The work was banned by the King of France. It spread the foundational ideas of the French Revolution and enlightenment thinkers. "No encyclopaedia perhaps has been of such political importance or has occupied so conspicuous a place in the civil and literary history of its century. It sought not only to give information but to guide opinion." "It was a war machine; as it progressed its attacks on both the church and still more on despotic government as well as Christianity itself became bolder and more undistinguished and it was met with persecution and opposition unparalleled in the the history of encyclopedias." - Encyclopedia Britannica 11th ed p. 1483. "A monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien regime and in heralding the French Revolution" Printing in the Mind of Man 200. The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated.

The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers:

"'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century." Marmontel condemned the violence against the native Americans indigenous people. This plea was not suited in the time of the French monarchy during the ancien regime based on intolerance and intimidation. The archbishop of Paris Mgr. Chrisophe de Beaumont banned the work of Marmontel in 1767. Also in The Netherlands there was a vivid dispute this time on the idea that also non-christians heidenen could join in heaven.
