Notes: Text in French<br>Jean François Marmontel was a French historian and writer. The author was elected to the Académie française in 1763. In 1767 he published Bélisaire now remarkable in part because of a chapter on religious toleration which incurred the censure of the Sorbonne and the archbishop of Paris. Marmontel retorted in Les Incas by tracing the cruelties in Spanish America to the religious fanaticism of the invaders. Size: 8vo Illustration: . 11 plates including the frontis. The sixth edition of this work which was first issued in 1777. Jean-Francois Marmontel was a member of the Encyclopedistes movement. He wrote many articles for the movement. Marmontel gained patronage of Madame de Pompadour which enabled him to take a place of the official journal 'Le Mercure'. This work traces the cruelties in Spanish America and discusses the effect of the invader's religious fanaticism on the native people. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and two plates. Contemporary inscription to the verso of front endpaper in French for a prize in French language from Temple Grove East Sheen awarded to 'Erlysman Pinkney' and dated December 1851. A bright copy of this novel by a prolific author remembered for his contributions to the 'Encyclopedistes' movement. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally smart with several light marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots mostly to the first and last few pages. " Les Incas Los Incas 1777 una extensa narración trufada de reflexiones filosóficas y de abundantes datos históricos que delataban un minucioso trabajo de documentación sobre la conquista y colonización del Perú y el genocidio de su población indígena. Del cuidado que puso Marmontel en la elaboración de esta obra dan fe la numerosas redacciones que ensayó hasta obtener la versión que dio por definitiva: en 1771 el rey Gustavo III de Suecia 1746-1792 a quien iba dedicada Les Incas recibió el manuscrito con un primer esbozo de la obra; seis años después cuando por fin pasó por la imprenta la versión que dio por válida Marmontel el escrupuloso autor había trabajado en una docena de redacciones distintas. La crítica se dividió a la hora de valorar esta obra pero no así los lectores que acogieron con entusiasmo su publicación y la convirtieron en un texto paradigmático de la denuncia de la esclavitud la intolerancia racial y el fanatismo religioso. Se trata sin lugar a dudas de la obra de Marmontel que gozó de mayor fortuna tras la desaparición de su autor como queda patente en las reediciones que se hicieron de ella durante los siglos XIX y XX" texto extraído de la web de mcnbiografías.
