Un des 20 premiers exemplaires sur Rives avec la suite en bistre n° 12 sans le cuivre annoncé mais enrichi de la gouache originale d'une des illustration signée par l'artiste mine de plomb encre et gouache ; celle-ci est mentionnée à l'encre à la page de justification « dessin original ». La gouache réalisée sur une feuille de papier japon 200 x 250 mm est montée sur un support à encadrement au format de l'exemplaire. . Agent de liaison pendant la première guerre mondiale André Maurois qui ne portait pas encore ce nom « profita de ses observations prises sur le vif pour donner forme à son désir d'écrire. La guerre des tranchées vue sous l'angle des Anglo-Saxons - flegmatiques et considérant l'humour comme un devoir - lui inspira des notes qu'il rédigea dans un style déjà très personnel. Le jeune interprète fut en tous points charmé par ses compagnons de combat et il se peignit lui-même dans cette chronique sous le nom d'Aurelle. Au milieu des pires situations provoquées par la bataille s'enchâssent des conversations des réflexions à caractère "ethnologiques" ainsi que de jolis poèmes en forme de correspondance. Maurois obtint avec ce livre un premier et foudroyant succès : le nom de Bramble restant pour les générations futures caractéristiques de l'Anglais-type » Laffont-Bompiani. Lauréat du Prix Abd-el-Tif en 1925 Louis Berthommé Saint-André est alors le plus jeune pensionnaire de la fameuse villa d'Alger dédiée aux Arts et participe à partir de 1931 à de nombreuses publications illustrées dont plusieurs érotiques pour des oeuvres de Boccace Verlaine Apollinaire ou Baudelaire : « Bien qu'il ait peint beaucoup de paysages il est surtout connu comme peintre de personnages et plus particulièrement de femmes. » Connaissance des arts n° 80 octobre 1958. André Maurois 1885 - 1967 was a French author. During World War I he joined the French army and served as an interpreter for Lieutenant Colonel Winston Churchill. In I938 Maurois was elected to the prestigious Académie française. He died in 1967 in Neuilly-sur-Sein after a long career as an author of novels biographies histories children's books and science fiction stories. Size is 280mm x 215mm. Condition is good. This truly lovely picture is 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches on a piece of paper 6-1/2 x 5-1/4 inch. Pictures available on request. The book's original printed paper wrapper is here bound in a very fine hardcover binding of leather with gorgous green and purple swirl paper on the boards 4 raised spine bands and bright gilt trim on spine and boards. Top edge gilt. The only fault is that the originally dark green leather has faded unevenly being now brown on spine and brown and green on boards. No owner marks.
