A Proustian pastiche first published in English in this limited edition of 530 copies and in 1934 by Gallimard with the title "Le Côté de Chelsea" this short book echoes the tile of Proust's most famous work "Swann's Way" and was translated by Hamish Miles. <br /> <br /> ANDRÉ MAUROIS born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog 1885 - 1967 was a French novelist biographer storyteller and essayist elected to the prestigious Académie française in 1938. During World War I he joined the French army and served as an interpreter for Lieutenant Colonel Winston Churchill. He was a prolific writer and is best known for his excellence in biographies of important writers -Shelley Byron Victor Hugo George Sand or Balzac-political figures like Disraeli and General Lyautey and scientists like Alexander Fleming. Cloth chemise. Fine/Very Good. Hermine David 1886-1970. No. 205 of limitation total of 1125 copies. 7 324 3 pp. And five etched plates done in dry point by David. Also a loose thin promotional sheet from the publisher. This Maurois novel first appeared in 1923. David was a post-Impressionist painter who was a part of the Ecole de Paris movement whose members were mostly not French born David being an exception to this. But she did marry a fellow member of this group Jules Pascin with whom she emigrated to American for five years. In the 1920s she became an active enthusiastic book illustrator this being a fine example of her work in the medium. Ours is a beautiful copy of this edition. It looks virtually untouched with the leaves generally uncut and all the tissue guards still in perfect shape. The glassine dust jacket has a few closed tears and tiny holes which with the material doesn't take much handling to occur. The slipcase and chemise have some color fading of their blue and the slipcase has light edgewear. Its skiver title label has a tiny pinprick blemish. But are structurally sound attractive and will continue to protect the book proper. The dust jacket alone we would grade Very Good Minus the slipcase and chemise Very Good Plus.
