First published in 1918 LES SILENCES DU COLONEL BRAMBLE was a popular novel about a French officer working as an interpreter with the British during World War I and based on Maurois's real experiences. Marie-Louis H. Farge's work has touches of fin-de-siècle aesthetics mixed with the harder geometries of modernism. A 1929 notice in ARTS ET MÉTIERS GRAPHIQUES PARIS for an exhibition of around fifty bindings by Farge remarks on her unusual combinations of tools and ornaments. Laboureur was a highly acclaimed engraver of the same era his limited editions highly sought and often serving as the foundation for fine bindings as here. 9'' x 6.25''. Contemporary half goatskin by Marie-Louise H. Farge spine stamped in gilt and blind. Marbled endpapers top edge gilt. Original wrappers bound in. A lovely later edition of 1944 in the original French. With the unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only and a slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper dated 19548. The dust wrapper is smart with some shelf wear and edge wear some chipping to the tail of the spine and a minor loss to the head of the spine. Unclipped. Internally firmly bound. Originally published in wrappers in a board slipcase although currently in a handsome deep brown leather binding with gold stamping. Slipcase has significant wear and soiling and has been "repaired" with numerous pieces of adhesive tape. But the binding is quite handsome and sharp done at an unknown time by the Houston binder A. V. Emmott & Sons whose discreet stamp remains on the inside rear cover. Previous owner's name is neatly stamped in red on the limitation page but otherwise there are no internal markings. Number 276 in a limited edition of 800 copies. Twenty full page charming lithographic illustrations by Berthommé Saint-André still have their archival paper covers. La gouache réalisée sur une feuille de papier japon 200 x 250 mm est montée sur un support à encadrement au format de l'exemplaire. . Agent de liaison pendant la première guerre mondiale André Maurois qui ne portait pas encore ce nom « profita de ses observations prises sur le vif pour donner forme à son désir d'écrire. La guerre des tranchées vue sous l'angle des Anglo-Saxons - flegmatiques et considérant l'humour comme un devoir - lui inspira des notes qu'il rédigea dans un style déjà très personnel. Le jeune interprète fut en tous points charmé par ses compagnons de combat et il se peignit lui-même dans cette chronique sous le nom d'Aurelle. Au milieu des pires situations provoquées par la bataille s'enchâssent des conversations des réflexions à caractère "ethnologiques" ainsi que de jolis poèmes en forme de correspondance. Maurois obtint avec ce livre un premier et foudroyant succès : le nom de Bramble restant pour les générations futures caractéristiques de l'Anglais-type » Laffont-Bompiani.
