Born as Emile Herzog he changed his name assimilated and published his first novel in 1918. During WWII he supported the Vichy regime but was a strong opponent of Hitler and eventually had to flee to the United States where he taught at Princeton. He is perhaps even more widely known in Great Britain and the U.S. for his masterful biographies of Shelley and Byron and his books on the Edwardian era and English history. unknown books
