Le feuillet de table a été placé en toute fin d'ouvrage et non au début comme l'indique Tchemerzine. Dans cet ouvrage pionnier, Fénelon s'adresse aux mères et aux gouvernantes, proposant une réflexion profondément novatrice sur l’éducation des filles à une époque où celle-ci était souvent négligée. L'ouvrage oscille ainsi entre tradition et modernité : tout en maintenant des rôles genrés, Fénelon revendique pour les filles un accès à la lecture, à l’écriture, à la religion et à une certaine culture générale. Il s'oppose aux excès de la mondanité et à la frivolité, et prône une simplicité vertueuse, fondement d'un bonheur domestique et social. Dans le contexte du XVIIe siècle, De l'éducation des filles s’impose comme un texte à la fois conservateur et audacieux, qui pose les jalons d'une pédagogie féminine avant l'heure, et qui influencera durablement la pensée éducative, y compris au siècle des Lumières.
