A first edition copy of this classic of Christian literature containing François Fénelon's defense of the Christian religion. The first edition of this work in a full speckled calf binding with marbled paste downs and end papers. Bookplate to the front paste down of 'James Dolphin Watson' with a stamp. Ink inscription to the verso of the front free end paper and to the title page. Five letters concerning the Christian religion written in the original French by François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon more commonly known as François Fénelon 1651-1715 the French Catholic archbishop theologian poet and writer. The first of these letters was written on the existence of the God; the second on the worship of God the immortality of the soul and free will; the third on divinity and on religion; the fourth on the idea of infinity and on the freedom of God to create; and the fifth on the truth of religion and on its practice. Fénelon argues that God is an infinitely perfect being and that the only way to worship God is through Catholicism. In a full speckled calf binding. Externally sound though rubbed. Gilt remains bright. Joints are cracking with a little of the backstrip lifting. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean except for a little age toning to the title page. According to Spielman Fenelon 1651 - 1715 was a famous French ecclesiastic who tutored Louis XIV's grandson the Duke of Burgundy. It is no surprise then that these little tales are moral and religious teachable moments for young children. The illustrations have "quite exceptional charm" and are beautifully colored. F.
