He published numerous works on the Ukrainian language including a book on syntax in relation to phraseology and stylistics in which he advocated the use of vernacular constructions in all fields of speech and writing. His stance attracted attention from Communist Party and he was arrested and imprisoned in the 1930s. This is stated on the limitation page to be one of "1250 copies of which 990 are for America." Although one is usually well-advised to take the professed numbers on these vintage-erotica items with a grain of salt what makes this one especially interesting though is that instead of a number written into the blank space below the statement the single word "presentation" is inked; in addition on the half-title page is a 3-inch-tall original drawing of yet another nudie that is SIGNED by Clara Tice. With a striking and intellectually playful pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown juxtaposing religious and symbolic imagery in a manner curiously - and perhaps deliberately - at odds with the erotic subject of the work. A superb copy.

A highly desirable American private-press edition of Aphrodite the scandalous first novel of Pierre Louÿs originally published in 1896. Set in Hellenistic Alexandria the novel traces the destructive and obsessive relationship between the courtesan Chrysis and the sculptor Démétrios whose passion ultimately drives him to theft and murder.

Upon publication the work became an immediate sensation in France reportedly running through dozens of printings within months while its frank sensuality ensured controversy abroad; early English-language editions circulated privately and attracted the attention of American censors remaining difficult to obtain in the United States for many years.

This edition is distinguished by the etchings of Clara Tice the so-called "Queen of Greenwich Village" whose witty and unabashedly sensual style brought her considerable notoriety and popularity in the 1920s. The present copy one of the specially colored examples represents the most desirable state of the edition the hand-applied color heightening the immediacy and charm of Tice's distinctive interpretations.

A particularly appealing example combining the allure of a once-suppressed modern classic with the lively graphic work of one of America's most celebrated bohemian illustrators. "Aphrodite: Ancient Manners" is a description of courtesan life in Alexandria by French poet and writer Pierre Louÿs 1870 - 1925 who is best known for the classical and lesbian themes in some of his writings. The book became an instant success when in was published in 1896 and became the subject of several editions including this privately-printed edition accompanied by the a fanciful nude by Clara Tice 1888 - 1973 whom Vanity Fair dubbed "The Queen of Greenwich Village". Tice drew racy illustrations at a time when ladies did not engage in such things and when Anthony Comstock's Society for the Suppression of Vice was very active. Tice attracted their unwanted attention for one of her early exhibitions at Polly's Restaurant in Greenwich Village in 1915 and it helped to jump-start her career. According to The New York Times 27 June 1920 she was the first woman in Greenwich village to bob her hair. Tice also created a cartoon strip and posters and she is included in the New York Dada Movement. Privately Printed unknown

Hardcover. quarter-bound light blue cloth over marbled boards; gilt-stamped lettering and small nude figure illustration on spine; no dust jacket a lovely copy with just the slightest wear to the extremities including a very slight exposure of the board at the lower tips; some of the pages remain unopened. B&W etchings A nice copy of this desirable edition of the French poet's scandalous first novel originally published in 1896 which recounts the tortured relationship of the courtesan Chrysis and the sculptor Démétrios the latter driven to commit theft and ultimately murder by the former's resistance to his desire for her. A sensation in France it was reported to have already had 35 printings within a few months of its first publication an English translation was printed in Paris as early as 1900 but the book drew the attention of American censors and customs officials and remained difficult to obtain in the U.S. for many years. When Louys's brother-in-law lectured at Harvard in 1900 one prominent and widely-syndicated literary critic opined that "he ought to be ashamed of the relationship" because "Aphrodite" was "written printed and bound nastiness and unadulterated filth." Eventually a theatrical adaptation had a five-month run in New York in late 1919 and early 1920 and got the bluenoses' panties in a bunch all over again. The nekkid-lady illustrations in this edition "limited to 650 copies of which which 600 copies are for sale" this being no. 499 are by Clara Tice the so-called "Queen of Greenwich Village"; this was one of a dozen or so books Tice illustrated during the 1920s when she was at the height of her fame and in great demand as a magazine and theatrical illustrator. .
