A nice-looking copy of a scarce item a fine contribution to the series Pierre Louys et L'histoire Litteraire being a collection of letters between Pierre Louys 1870-1925 to Louis Lachevre 1855-1947. Original printed paper wrappers in gate-fold showing a little wear and discoloration else clean and unmarked. Some toning to first free endpaper and recto perhaps where a loose review item might have lain. Louÿs was an extremely well known and loved French poet and writer who was initially made first a Chevalier and then an Officer of the Légion d'honneur for his contributions to French literature. Frederic Lachevre was a Parisian bibliophile extraordinaire publisher literary critic poet and novelist. Like Louys Lachevre was interested also in erotica sexuality sensuality and including lesbian existence.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Each page with a gold border. Pp. iv 28. 4to. loose as issued in the original wrappers with original gold-printed glacine housed in the original chemise and slipcase of gold highlighted marbled paper covered boards. A very good bright copy the slipcase is a little rubbed at the extremities and the chemise has very subtle reinforcing of the spine.Chrysis forms the subject of Louys’s best known erotic book Aphrodite. Set in Alexandria the book follows the fortunes of the courtesan Chrysis who is known for her beauty and her skill at winning the devotion and servility of men and her ambition of love with the sculptor Demetrios. Louys was writing to espouse his philosophy that nudity human sexuality and pleasure should all be embraced in the pursuit of perfect love. Stamped twice one saying "Form '2 Censorship Dialogue Script" and the other "File Copy Return to Script Dept. Paramount Studio-Hollywood." Pencil notation from Peter Howard below title. John Dos Passos adapted Pierre Louys' story into this screenplay. It was released that same year directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich Lionel Atwill Cesar Romero Edward Everett Horton and Alison Skipworth. The Spanish Embassy demanded that the film be withdrawn from circulation and that all prints be destroyed. A financial flop anyway Paramount agreed to supress all copies of the film in November 1935. It was considered lost until Sternberg magically produced a copy for the 1959 Venice Film Festival.</p> Paramount Studio paperback

He captures the libertine nature of Louys’s stories rather well with this binding - the stories include <em>Une volupté nouvelle La confession de Mlle X Une ascension au Venusberg</em> and <em>La persienne.</em> An excellent signed <em>cuir repoussé </em>binding by the master Louis Dézé on the first edition of Louys’ first collection of libertine stories Philippe Renouard for Eugene Fasquelle hardcover
