Largo 4to consisting of all loose signatures ready for choice of binding in the French style. 20 full page drypoint etchings by Mariette Lydis of distinctly erotic nature to match the verses. Delicately touched with color highlights. Abundant nudity. The signatures are enclosed in stiff cream colored wraps printed in red. Protected by a tan paper-covered hardbound chemise with spine titling and that inside a tan paper-covered slipcase with brown cloth framing the opening. The slipcase and chemise show signs of fingering and the bottom of the slipcase is beginning to split on one side but the internal materials are fine and bright. Claimed to have been translated from Ancient Greek of a courtesan named Billitis contemporary to Sappho they are actually clever fabulations by Louys himself and they are considered important literature. The poems are a blend of mellow sensuality and polished style in the manner of Parnassianism with subtle Gallic undertones characteristic of the author's writing. Illustrated with five erotic illustrations in colour by Lobel Riche. Rebound in half morocco binding with the original wraps and spine bound in with the volume.
