An utterly candid diarist Mann began keeping a journal as a schoolboy in Lubeck during the 1890's but later burned his youthful notebooks in fear that someone might read them. Mann nevertheless resumed the practice chronicling the steady growth and notable events of his brilliant literary career including his Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 as well as his daily thoughts hopes fears and aspirations and his exile from Germany immediately prior to and during World War II.
