Mann no livro 1491. Na maioria deles o continente descrito como um territ�rio vasto pouqu�ssimo povoado por primitivos cujas culturas inevitavelmente se curvariam diante do poderio europeu. No entanto o que Mann - um historiador com alma de jornalista investigativo que colabora com as revistas ""Science"" e ""Atlantic Monthly"" - descobriu � que por d�cadas pesquisadores j� v�m encontrando respostas para essa pergunta. E para sua surpresa o que revelam em seus artigos � muito diferente do que pensa a maioria dos americanos e europeus e pouqu�ssimo conhecido fora dos c�rculos acad�micos especializados. Mas todos t�m pelo menos uma coisa em comum: sugerem que muito do que acreditamos est� muitas vezes errado. Por exemplo Mann conta que em 1491 havia provavelmente mais pessoas vivendo nas Am�ricas do que na Europa. Cidades como Tenochititl�n a capital asteca reuniam popula��es muito maiores do que qualquer cidade europ�ia contempor�nea e �� diferen�a de muitas capitais no velho mundo tinham �gua corrente e ruas limpas e ajardinadas. E detalhe: as primeiras cidades no continente j� prosperavam antes mesmo de os eg�pcios terem constru�do as suas grandes pir�mides. Mann sabe que muito do que relata no livro � especula��o ainda requer aprofundamento e pode sofrer mudan�as com o passar dos anos. No entanto suas descobertas chamam a aten��o para um olhar relativista que evita o etnocentrismo recorrente dos livros com foco na chegada dos europeus. Por isso mesmo a inten��o do autor n�o � fazer um relato cronol�gico e sistem�tico do desenvolvimento cultural e social do Hemisf�rio Ocidental antes da chegada dos europeus. Tampouco quer tra�ar uma hist�ria intelectual completa das mudan�as recentes de perspectiva entre os pesquisadores que estudam os primeiros americanos. Em vez disso 1491 explora os tr�s focos principais das novas descobertas: demografia �ndia origens �ndias e ecologia �ndia. Considerando que tantas sociedades diferentes ilustram esses pontos de modos t�o diversos Mann escolheu exemplos entre culturas que est�o mais bem documentadas ou que chamaram a aten��o mais recentemente ou que apenas pareceram mais intrigantes. Como � o caso da nova vers�o da vinda dos primeiros americanos que podem n�o ter migrado pelo estreito de Bhering em 12 mil AC como se especula mas sim pelo Pac�fico de barco dez ou vinte mil anos mais cedo.
