Walworth was an unstable abusive husband who had threatened the reputation and livelihood of his step-sister ex-wife and the legitimacy of his son Frank by claiming he was conceived before the marriage and thus the only reason the marriage was allowed. While convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison young Frank Walworth was transferred to an insane asylum and pardoned only four years after the parricide by the Governor of New York. A characteristic pot-boiler from the novelist whose infamy as an abusive husband was secured after he was shot and killed by his teenage son Frank Walworth in 1873. Mansfield had beaten his wife often and bitten her badly at least once; such excerpts of letters to her threatening murder and suicide that this cataloger has seen have a morbid and sensationalist cast consonant with the tone of this novel; the son's release and pardon on grounds of insanity seems also suitably Gothic in keeping with Mansfield Walworth's own fictions. An Original Hand Written General Session of the Delivery of Gaol in the County of Surrey and Richmond led by Sir James Mansfield and other justices. The document goes in detail of various felonies by certain individuals in Richmond and the length of Gaol and felonies such as burglary and stealing horses. These were committed mainly by a gentleman John Knight who was apprehended by Ralph Price. 1805. Signed in the hand by Mansfield to the base. Sir James Mansfield 1734-1821 was a British lawyer judge and politician. He was twice Solicitor General and served as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas from 1799 to 1814.
