By exposing injustice and inequality social conscience keeps before our eyes the ideal of a society based on brotherhood that transforms economic and political relations into fellowship and binds individuals into the human family." --from the introduction by Andrew R. 1923007700London: Constable & Co. Ltd. 1923. First edition. Hardcover. This an exceptional jacketed first edition of Katherine Mansfields poems compiled by her husband John Middleton Murry and published the year she died of tuberculosis at the age of 34.

The handsome binding features quarter tan linen with dark red Morocco spine label and brown paper-covered boards. The contents are bound with untrimmed fore and bottom edges and gilt top edge. The book was issued in a tan laid paper dust jacket printed in dark red on the spine and front face.

Condition approaches truly fine in a near fine dust jacket. The binding is square tight and pristine with sharp corners and no reportable wear or blemishes. The contents are immaculate with no spotting or previous owner names. The small printed sticker of a New York bookseller Edgar H. Wells & Co. is affixed to the lower rear pastedown. This is plausibly the original seller of this book; Edgar Huidekoper Wells 1875-1938 operated Edgar H. Wells and Company a rare book shop in New York City from 1921 to 1938. The scarce dust jacket is remarkably well-preserved only lightly toned and soiled and nearly complete the sole exception being fractional loss at the upper rear joint. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover.

The book is housed in a dark red cloth chemise housed in a matching slipcase featuring a hubbed and rounded dark red Morocco spine over dark red cloth-covered sides. The slipcase is intact though scuffed and worn having apparently long and admirably done its job of protecting the magnificent copy within.

Mansfield 1888-1923 was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp in New Zealand which she left for England at the age of 19 to begin a career as an author. She wrote novels and poetry but it was primarily as a short story writer of brilliantly compressed short fiction that she made her reputation. She and her second husband John Middleton Murry attracted exceptional talents including D. H. and Frieda Lawrence and Virginia Woolf.

Mansfields stories have found many distinguished admirers she is praised for her economy and speed in assembling and dissolving a scene; for her wit and a touch of the surreal; for her divination of the hatred and cruelties beneath the sweet surfaces of family life; and for her sympathy with the vulnerable the displaced and the lonely. ODNB

Of Mansfields poetry Murrys Introductory Note says she had written and at long intervals continued to write poetry. Perhaps her poetry is not quite poetry just as her prose is not quite prose. Certainly they belong to the same order; they have the same simple and mysterious beauty Comparatively few of these poems have been published The poems have been roughly grouped in periods. Katherine Mansfields practice was suddenly to spend several days in writing poetry and then to abandon poetry wholly for months and years together.

Constable & Co. Ltd. hardcover

194586728Mansfield OH: Mansfield News-Journal 1945. Extra edition. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Newspaper. Fair. Format is approximately 17 inches wide and 24 inches long. RARE surviving copy. Newspaper is fragile with some tears at the folds and one corner. Signed in the upper left corner of the front page by Paul Tibbets pilot of the B29 Enola Gay that bombed Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. It is not clear when Tibbets signed this as he was still overseas when this special Extra edition was published. He did retire to Ohio and the handwriting of his autograph may indicate he was old at the time. This Extra edition has a massive illustrated banner headline that reads "Japs Quit" and below the masthead other large headlines read War in Pacific Over! and Truman Announces Foe's Unconditional Surrender. These are all 'above the fold'. Some content came from the Associated Press and United Press International news services. This Extra edition appears to be four pages complete with the last page one of comics horoscope and a crossword puzzle. The Mansfield News Journal is a daily newspaper based in Mansfield Ohio that serves Richland Ashland and Crawford counties as well as parts of Morrow Knox and Huron counties in the north central part of the state. The News Journal was formed by the merger of the Mansfield News and the Mansfield Journal in 1932. The paper celebrated its 75th anniversary in December 2007. The paper is owned by Gannett The USA Today Network of Ohio and has downsized its print operation in to focus more upon online content. The newspaper's web site was chosen the state's best among newspapers in its circulation category in 2007 in the annual AP contest. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. 23 February 1915 - 1 November 2007 was a brigadier general in the United States Air Force. He is best known as the aircraft captain who flew the B-29 Superfortress known as the Enola Gay named after his mother when it dropped a Little Boy the first of two atomic bombs used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Tibbets enlisted in the United States Army in 1937 and qualified as a pilot in 1938. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he flew anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic. In February 1942 he became the commanding officer of the 340th Bombardment Squadron of the 97th Bombardment Group which was equipped with the Boeing B-17. In July 1942 the 97th became the first heavy bombardment group to be deployed as part of the Eighth Air Force and Tibbets became deputy group commander. He flew the lead plane in the first American daylight heavy bomber mission against Occupied Europe on 17 August 1942 and the first American raid of more than 100 bombers in Europe on 9 October 1942. Tibbets was chosen to fly Major General Mark W. Clark and Lieutenant General Dwight D. Eisenhower to Gibraltar. After flying 43 combat missions he became the assistant for bomber operations on the staff of the Twelfth Air Force. Tibbets returned to the United States in February 1943 to help with the development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. In September 1944 he was appointed the commander of the 509th Composite Group which would conduct the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war he participated in the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946 and was involved in the development of the Boeing B-47 Stratojet in the early 1950s. He commanded the 308th Bombardment Wing and 6th Air Division in the late 1950s and was military attaché in India from 1964 to 1966. He retired from the Air Force in 1966. In 1989 he published his memoir Flight of the Enola Gay which chronicles his life to that date. In 1995 he denounced the 50th anniversary exhibition of the Enola Gay at the Smithsonian Institution which attempted to present the bombing in context with the destruction it caused as a "damn big insult" due to its focus on the Japanese casualties rather than the brutality of the Japanese government.59 He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1996.
