A bright set, comprising Vol. I: Sense and Sensibility (1882); Vol. II: Emma (1882); Vol. III: Mansfield Park (1883); Vol. IV: Northanger Abbey [and] Persuasion (1885); Vol. V: Pride and Prejudice (1881); Vol. VI: Memoir, Lady Susan, Fragments (fifth edition, 1883). The five frontispieces are by Greatbatch after Pickering from the original Standard Novels issues of 1833; the portrait and facsimile are from the 1870 'Memoir'. HANDSOME SET OF THE LAST STEVENTON EDITION, AND THE LAST EDITION OF AUSTEN PRINTED BY BENTLEY BEFORE ACQUISITION BY SMITH ELDER IN 1898. Initially published in 1923 as Vol. III of Chapman's five-volume edition of The Novels. The 'illustrations from contemporary sources' are a new feature, augmented here by type-facsimiles of the first volume of the edition of 1814, and all three volumes of the second edition of 1816. Each of Chapman's five volumes is complete in itself, with introductory note and considerable bibliographical and literary apparatus. Importantly the present text was not set up specifically for the 1923 edition but reprinted from the Oxford edition of 1912 (see Gilson E133). Gilson E150 (recording the five-volume collection).

E' in quest'ultima prospettiva che si pone questo volume, in cui, attraverso una dettagliata analisi testuale che prende in esame buona parte della produzione più matura della Mansfield, si dimostra il suo impegno per la trasformazione ed il perfezionamento di questo genere narrativo, che trova in lei uno dei maggiori artefici della sua nobilitazione.

Manuscript ownership of Richard Mansfield (1857-1907), who was considered the greatest actor of his era. Printed bookplate of J. Mortimer Lichtenauer (b. 1876), a famous art collector and painter of mural decorations in a Grecian style. The text includes "Aristotle's Treatise on Poetry" (Twining's translation); "Excerpta Critica" (Canons of Criticism from Various Sources); "Examination Papers"; Etc. This Irish classic in the history and criticism of Greek drama is quite scarce in the marketplace. John Richard Darley (1799-1884) was born in Fairfield, County Monaghan, Ireland, and was educated at Trinity College Dublin. Ribelle, pellegrina, trasformista senza radici se non quelle che affondano nella scrittura, KM, come si firma la nostra 'stella'- con l'accelerazione di chi non ha neppure il tempo di compitare per intero il suo nome -, sprigiona la luce di una realtà esotica, magica, che questo romanzo ricrea, grazie a un gioco di scatole cinesi che i due protagonisti, un fratello e una sorella affascinati dalla scrittrice neozelandese, aprono a una a una guidandoci a un incontro profondo con la sua immaginazione. Come sempre nelle scritture dell'anima, il viaggio è verso l'origine, che è immancabilmente anche l'inizio di tutto. Perché l'anima è un demone legato al luogo di nascita, e lì KM torna scrivendo. E se il prezzo del suo viaggio à rebours è, alla lettera, una iniziazione alla sua propria morte e rinascita nella scrittura, chi legga l'ispirato dialogo delle due voci di questo romanzo comprenderà come ogni volta chi legge davvero entra con il proprio autore, o autrice, in un colloquio autentico, in una relazione creativa che riporta alla vita chi l'ha pronunciata. Sì che potremmo dire che, se scrivere è inoltrarsi nel mistero alchemico di un'opera al nero, leggere lo è altrettanto.
