Mansfield's scientific orientation is notable in the perspective & approach displayed in this work where he devotes much thought & consideration to motive & powered aerial navigation as then current LTA efforts were subject to the whims of nature as they had been for the most part ever since Montgolfier. This publication along with all of his other works though written in the early 1850s was issued posthumously Mansfield having died prematurely at the young age of 36 from burns suffered during a laboratory accident.
