A little bumped and rubbed with some fraying at the head and the foot of the spine; a very good copy. 8vo blind-stamped original green cloth gilt lettering 470 8 pages. A characteristic pot-boiler from the novelist whose infamy as an abusive husband was secured after he was shot and killed by his teenage son Frank Walworth in 1873. Mansfield had beaten his wife often and bitten her badly at least once; such excerpts of letters to her threatening murder and suicide that this cataloger has seen have a morbid and sensationalist cast consonant with the tone of this novel; the son's release and pardon on grounds of insanity seems also suitably Gothic in keeping with Mansfield Walworth's own fictions. Docketed on verso in a contemporary hand and signed by three persons named on recto. Paper leaf lined vertically in red with eight blind stamps reading "shilling" and showing a coat of arms. 1 parchment leaf and one paper leaf. English legal history in detail. This warrant describes the crimes of several named persons including Daniel Halls convicted of felony and burglary against Elizabeth Wilson widow to the sum of twelve shillings and eight pence.<br/><br/>This legal document describes the course of redress for a theft in some detail including a reward of forty pounds for the apprehension of housebreakers divided among Elizabeth Wilson Daniel Wilson and James Button.<br/><br/>The note on the verso records the payment of the reward and includes the signatures of Elizabeth Wilson Daniel Wilson and "the mark of James Button" a shaky X. Interestingly it appears that Elizabeth Wilson was literate enough to write her own name.<br/><br/>This note is interesting for its legal history but also its association with William Lord Mansfield who was associated with the reform of the English legal system in his time.<br/><br/>Together with a paper leaf that appears to be a clerk's listing of cases filed with their assignments to judges annotated in the border. Several of the cases are signed by Lord Mansfield. unknown books

In full: "I sincerely hope that you enjoy my new movie 'Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter'. I suppose you flipped as I did over Spike Jones' new album 'Dinner Music for People Who Aren't Very Hungry'. Love Jayne. P.S. Incidentally; Spike Helen and 'The Band That Plays For Fun' open at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas on Sept. 4." Three very light creases at the upper right hand margin that do not detract from the uniqueness of this item -- otherwise fine condition.<br/><br/> American film theater and television actress best known as a major sex symbol of the 1950s and early 1960s. Signed on May 2 1956 the terms of the one-year contract began on September 17 1956 in time to allow Mansfield to star as the blonde bombshell Jerri Jordan rock 'n roll classic THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT released at the end of the year featuring musical appearances by Fats Domino Little Richard Gene Vincent The Platters Eddie Cochran et. al. The studio offered her $1250 per week for the year with a multi-year options for renewal.
