Klein-Oktav 153 cm. wenig berieben und bestoßen kleine Einrisse an der Rückenkante neue Vorsätze Titelblatt in FAKSIMILE innen durchgehend unterschiedlich braunfleckig im Ganzen ordentliches Exemplar. Im Jahr der Erstausgabe. Die Bogennorm in vorliegendem Bändchen lautet: "Goethe's W. 6. B." auf dem Rückenschildchen noch ergänzt durch die Jahreszahl "1790". Es handelt sich nach Goedeke um die Nebenausgabe "Alpha" zur eigentlichen Erstausgabe bestehend aus den unveränderten Bogen aus dem 6. Band der 1790 bei Göschen erschienenen achtbändigen Werkausgabe. In diesen 6. Band der Werkausgabe war auch noch Goethes Festspiel "Lila" eingebunden das in vorliegendem Exemplar nicht vorhanden ist. Das Titelblatt FEHLT wurde aber ergänzt durch ein hervorragendes Faksimile auf altem Papier. Der Druck ist identisch mit dem bei "deutschestextarchiv" digitalisierten Exemplar. "Torquato Tasso ist ein Schauspiel in fünf Aufzügen von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe das den italienischen Dichter Torquato Tasso 1544-1595 in den Mittelpunkt der Handlung stellt. Das Stück das sich streng an die klassische Regel von den drei Einheiten des Orts der Zeit und der Handlung hält entstand zwischen dem 30. März 1780 und dem 31. Juli 1789. Im Februar 1790 lag das Werk im Druck vor wurde aber erst am 16. Februar 1807 in Weimar uraufgeführt. Das Stück spielt an einem Frühlingstag um das Jahr 1577 Schauplatz ist Belriguardo ein Lustschloss von Alfons II. dem Herzog von Ferrara. Thema des Dramas ist - neben der Liebe des jungen Tasso zur Prinzessin von Este der Schwester des Herzogs - die Rolle des Dichters in der höfischen Gesellschaft. Wenn Tasso sagt: 'Einen Herrn / Erkenn ich nur den Herrn der mich ernährt / Dem folg ich gern sonst will ich keinen Meister. / Frei will ich sein im Denken und im Dichten! / Im Handeln schränkt die Welt genug uns ein.' so meint er mit dem Herrn den Herzog mit dem Meister den Staatssekretär Antonio Montecatino und mit der Welt den Fürstenhof. Abweichend von der klassischen Dramentheorie erlebt Tasso keine Katharsis seine Probleme bleiben ungelöst. Goethes Stück gilt heute als eines der ersten Künstlerdramen der Literatur." Wikipedia. First edition in English of Goethe's sensational novel one of the foundational texts of European Romanticism scarce in commerce: we can trace just two other copies in auction records. The novel was first published in German in 1774 when its author was 24. This English translation by Daniel Malthus is based on one of three early French translations of Goethe's original text. Malthus 1730-1800 was a friend of Rousseau and the father to the economist Thomas. His translation was praised by Goethe in 1783 as having "good feeling good sense and good taste" Lewisohn p. 269 and it was reprinted several times with six further English versions following in the 30 years after its publication. As well as contemporary German philosophy and music the novel was influenced by Goethe's readings of English literature: he responded to and admired Samuel Richardson's epistolary novels and Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield and he was like Werther a passionate reader of James Macpherson's Ossian. The novel also serves as an important precursor to British Romanticism though Goethe's rich and strange evocations of the relationship between nature and the imagination would be unmatched by anything in English for another 20 years. 2 vols in one octavo 162 x 105 mm. The other side of the story First edition of this rare imitation and continuation of Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werter an example of numerous English and American responses to the literary phenomenon. Albert is the fiancé of Charlotte. Werter's unrequited love for Charlotte drives him to suicide. The author writes in the same epistolary form Albert's account of the events. "According to Brandl this work was written by John Armstrong of Leith who gained some note as a writer of verses and also as a minister at Edinburgh. Very little seems to be known of this novel; no copy of it seems to have been preserved in any of the well-known libraries. The Critical Review spoke of the Sorrows of Werter as a 'pernicious novel' but called this imitation 'interesting and palliative'. The Monthly Review thought that the work would be read with pleasure as a sequel to Werter" Long p. 14. ESTC locates two copies in the British Isles BL NLS and five in North America two in Houghton Library of Congress Universities of Yale and Illinois. Octavo 171 x 101 mm.
