In the original French.'Considerations sur les Causes de la Grandeur des Romains et de leur Decadence' is a significant contribution to the study of the Romans a concise historical essay which explores the "causes of the greatness of their Romans and their decline". Such was the influence of this work that it inspired Edward Gibbon in his 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire'.By Montesquieu a French political philosopher. He originally intended to only write a few pages of the subject however finding himself overwhelmed with information he expanded to explore the beginnings of the Roman Republic up to the decay of the late Roman Empire.Publisher's woodcut device to the title page. Collated complete. In a full calf binding. Externally a little worn and rubbed. A small amount of loss to the fore edge of the front board and to the front joint and to the head and tail of the spine. Light marks and discolouration to the boards. Lacking a spine label. Minor bumping and loss of leather to the extremities. Small tears to the head and tail of the rear joint. Front hinge is strained. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Edge wear to the title and contents page resulting in small chips. The occasional ink annotation to the margins.
