A story recounting the experiences of two fictional Persian noblemen Usbek and Rica who spend several years in France under Louis XIV and the Regency. Beginning in 1711 when Usbek leaves his seraglio in Isfahan to make the long journey to France accompanied by his young friend Rica. During the trip and their long stay in Paris until 1720 they comment in letters exchanged with friends and mullahs on numerous aspects of Western Christian society particularly French politics and manners. Written by Charles Louis de Secondat baron de La Brede et de Montesquieu generally referred to as simply Montesquieu a French judge man of letters historian and political philosopher. Translated by John Davidson a British scholar. Illustrated by Charles-Edouard de Beaumont a French painter watercolourist draughtsman illustrator and lithographer. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the cloth. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. 17964331Paris: De l'Imprimerie de P. Didot l'aîné 1796. This leather-bound portfolio with a gilt mosaic design and a paper label on the front cover and spine contains 11 engraved plates. These are the frontispiece and ten engravings by Regnault from the 1796 edition of Montesquieu's Temple de Gnide. The engravings were etched by Bertaux and finished by De Ghendt Patas Halbou Baquoy Lingée Ponce and Le Barbier. Each etching measures 11 cm x 7 cm and is mounted on a 24 cm x 16 cm card. The portfolio measures 27 cm x 17 cm. The plates are in excellent condition with just a little handling and only a few small spots of foxing. The backing card is in good condition slightly darkened. The portfolio is clean and attractive but has a few marks to the interior and has been repaired with archival tape to the spine. . Ce portefeuille relié en cuir avec un motif mosaïqué doré et une étiquette en papier sur le premier plat et sur le dos contient 11 planches gravées. Il s'agit du frontispice et de dix gravures de Regnault tirées de l'édition de 1796 du Temple de Gnide de Montesquieu. Les gravures ont été gravées à l'eau-forte par Bertaux et terminées par De Ghendt Patas Halbou Baquoy Lingée Ponce et Le Barbier. Chaque gravure mesure 11 cm x 7 cm et est collée sur une carte de 24 cm x 16 cm. Le portfolio mesure 27 cm x 17 cm. Les planches sont en excellent état avec juste un peu de manipulation et seulement quelques petites rousseurs. La carte de support est en bon état légèrement assombrie. Title can be translated to Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline. From prominent French historian and philosopher Charles de Secondat baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu. First published anonymously in 1734 this detailled text on the complete lifespan of the Roman empire is an important work in the study of the field later inspiring Edward Gibbon's six-volume 1776 The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The revised version came in 1748 which Montesquieu crafted himself from his own notes at the time of original publication this 1769 work being a new edition published posthumously. Bound in brown full calf. Contemporary inscription to rear of front free endpaper followed by annotations presumably by the same hand to the rear of the title page. Externally very smart with slight bumping and rubbing minor loss of leather most noticeably along joints and to spine head and tail and a few scattered marks to boards. Internally firmly bound. A few small tears to page edges mainly to page 3. Generally bright and clean copy with light discolouration and the odd spot throughout and heavier spotting to the first and last few pages. Le texte est celui de l'édition de 1772, plus correct que celui de l'originale de 1725. Très rares piqûres sur les figures, papier Whatman exempt de rousseur. Coiffe de tête avec manque pour toutes les couvertures. intérieur de l'ouvrage en parfait état.
