Fine contemporary marbled full calf for College Royal de Rouen with gilt titles and decoration to spine and the College emblem stamped in gilt to upper. All edges and endpapers marbled. Some adhesive marks to front pastedown where the prize plate has been removed. Moderate occasional spotting throughout with some pencil notes to fly-leaves otherwise internally clean. An exceptionally clean unblemished binding a little sunned to spine. Near fine. A relatively short treatise on the greatness and decline of the Roman Empire first published in 1734 and widely acknowledged to be a major inspiration for Gibbon's Enlightenment masterpiece published two generations later in the 1770's and 1780's.
