Beau manuscrit d’un article cinglant publié dans Le Journal du 7 juin 1896 repris ensuite dans Gens de théâtre 1924 : Mirbeau y raconte avec sa verve satirique une visite à Mounet-Sully à qui il rapporte le « blasphème » de Catulle Mendès — ce dernier dans un texte intitulé Le Vrai Hamlet reprochant à l’acteur d’incarner non pas l’Hamlet de Shakespeare mais une vision « romantique » héritée de Delacroix. Le « grand tragédien » écoute impassible puis laisse tomber d’une voix « de gouffre » la riposte devenue mot-de-passe de la chronique : « Décidément il y a quelque chose de pourri dans le Danemark de la littérature ». Tout Mirbeau est là : le théâtre vu par le prisme du tempérament la pointe qui démasque les postures et l’art du portrait instantané — jusqu’à cette provocation paradoxale où l’on soutient qu’« à quoi bon des pièces puisqu’il y a la voix les gestes et les dents » de Mounet-Sully. La pièce s’inscrit aussi dans une histoire littéraire vécue : Mirbeau et Mendès amis en 1896 s’étaient naguère croisés l’épée à la main duel « courtois » du 29 décembre 1884 avant que Mirbeau n’en fasse amende honorable dans ses Impressions littéraires 1888 ; et c’est encore à Mendès que Mirbeau confiera bien plus tard le premier jet de Les Affaires sont les affaires. A limited edition of this novel by Octave Mirbeau first thus with the colourful illustrations by Pierre Falke. One of eleven hundred copies printed on Rives paper this copy number one hundred and ninety four. The last novel by French novelist and playwright Octave Mirbeau it proposes a fictional autobiography of the author's adventures with his dog Dingo providing a view of country life in Ponteilles en Barcis. It was completed by the author's friend Leon Werth when the author's ill health prevented him to continue. First edition to feature illustrations in colour by Pierre Falke. In the original French. Tall octavo original wrappers 422 pp a fine uncut copy. Text in French. The final novel by the French writer Octave Mirbeau Dingo was completed by his colleague Léon Werth. The story is a disturbing allegory of the violent unpredictability and murderous impulses that lurk deep within the human psyche the protagonist being a wild dingo whose existence within contemporary French society is described through the first-person narrative of his owner. The chief redeeming quality of the animal is however one that is often lacking in common human behaviour: the dingo's spontaneous interractions with its immmediate environment are instinctive and truthful neither denying the creature's real desires nor masking its own identity. Mirbeau paints the dingo as a paradox of outward savagery and profound harmony a depiction which perhaps comes close to inverting our general perception of so-called civilised humanity. Two copies of the first edition are recorded in Australian collections National Library of Australia; State Library of New South Wales. The SLNSW copy is also a numbered copy on papier de Hollande; however the NLA catalogue entry does not specify a paper type or number. unknown

He married the famous muse Misia Godebska in 1893.Thadée Natanson né à Varsovie en 1868 est issu d'une riche famille polonaise émigrée à Paris. Avec ses deux frères Alexandre et Louis-Alfred et leurs camarades du lycée Condorcet il fonde en 1889 une revue entièrement dédiée à la poésie La Revue Blanche. Il épouse Misia Godebska en 1893 laquelle devient rapidement la "Reine de Paris". Le couple reçoit des personnalités du monde artistique et littéraire de la Belle Époque notamment Stéphane Mallarmé Félix Vallotton Toulouse-Lautrec Octave Mirbeau ou encore Marcel Proust. Son engagement en faveur d'Alfred Dreyfus lui fait perdre de nombreux soutiens et La Revue Blanche fait faillite peu de temps après son divorce avec Misia en 1905.
