A Londres et se trouve Ã Paris chez Buisson 1787 Octavo 6-CLXII pp. and 180 pages in contemporary binding.The English translation of the Bhagavad Gita is the greatest accomplishment of notable Orientalist Wilkins founder of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. Published by the East India Company in 1785 under the patronage of Governor General Warren Hastings this translation had a profound impact on some of the greatest Western intellectuals of the time including Carlyle and Emerson. Soon after efforts were underway to translate this extraordinary text into other languages this French translation being the pre-eminent of all. As a beautiful testament to skilled pre-Revolutionary French printing this edition by Parisian publisher Buisson bears the signatory hallmark and increasing importance of oriental religion specifically Hinduism within the literary minds of France.The Bhagvat Geeta is part of the sixth book of the Mahabharata the great Indian epic. During the battle of Kurukshetra the Lord Krishna friend and charioteer of Arjun offers words of wisdom to the Pandava prince Arjun and this set of philosophical dialogues between them is a central text of Hinduism. The poem consists of 700 Sanskrit verses divided into 18 chapters here "lectures". In Hinduism Krishna is regarded as the human incarnation of God Vishnu. One may recall the famous Radha-Krishna love-songs and stories that form the bedrock of romantic literature in Sanskrit and other languages such as Maithili Bengali etc.Condition- In beautiful contemporary binding Pages are remarkably clean; a beautiful collector's copy in very good condition! With 9 carte de visite albumen prints ca. 8.5 x 5.5 cm by Hammerschmidt and Van Lint two albumen prints 9.5 x 12.5 cm by Sébah mounted on paper one silver gelatin print 8.5 x 11.5 cm by Lehnert & Landrock and one silver gelatin print 27 x 21 cm by Schroeder & Cie in a passepartout. Collection of early photographs of North-Africa and the Middle East by several photographers who had worked in the region. The main part of this collection consists of carte de visite portraits by Wilhelm Hammerschmidt ca. 1830-1869 from the 1860s. Most of them show Egyptians including a porter carrying a large chest on his back and a blind man. Three outdoor photographs show a group of men one holding a pipe almost as long as himself a camel rider and two camels in profile. Two larger photographs by the firm of Pascal Sébah from Istanbul date from the 1870s or 1880s and show a caravan halting in the desert. Of later date is the single image by the photographic duo Lehnert & Landrock who worked in Tunis in 1904-1914. Their picture which was popularly used in picture postcards shows a small group overlooking an oasis near Tripoli. The largest and most artistic photograph is by the Swiss firm Schroeder & Cie and dates from the 1880s. This striking image shows the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo with the crumbling remains of a rock and wall acting as repoussoir and a figure at the front watching from the shade. A strange stowaway in this collection is a single carte de visite by the Italian photographer Enrico Van Lint 1829-1882 of "Galileo's Lamp" the bronze lamp which Vincenzo Possenti created after a drawing by Leon-Battista Alberti in 1587 for the Pisa Cathedral.With 4 of the cartes de visite labelled on the back and one stamped with a name; the paper of the Sebáh photograph with an inscription in English and the Schroeder with an inscription on the back. Some of the sheets or cards on which the photographs are mounted are somewhat tattered at the edges and the cartes de visite have probably been trimmed. Twelvemo. 24 409 1 blank 6 pp. With preliminary blank a post-script leaf referring to the seventeenth letter and two final leaves of errata and advertisements. Added engraved title-page by Robert Vaughan. Eighteenth-century paneled calf neatly rebacked retaining old morocco lettering label. Spine lettered in gilt with decorative gilt board-edges. Eighteenth-century armorial bookplate of John Hustler of Acklam mounted on verso of engraved title-page. Early ink notations at bottom of engraved title-page. Leaves Q thru Q12 have been affected by printer's ink mostly just a little smudging; verso of Q10 is the only page where two lines of text have been affected. Apart from the few flaws this is a fine copy of a famous work. This work is a series of eighteen letters in which "Pascal defended Arnauld and satirized his Jesuit opponents and their theological and moral views. The work was published under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte and were probably the cooperative work of Pascal Arnauld and Pierre Nicole though they were principally Pascal" Edwards P. The Encyclopedia of Philosophy p. 52. Les Provinciales is considered one of the great French literary masterpieces and the first example of French prose. No translator's name ever appeared in any of the English editions and to this day the translator remains unknown. There is however a strong possibility that the work might have been translated by Evelyn. In 1664 a third volume on Jesuitisme appeared and the translation was fully acknowledged by Evelyn. In his diaries he writes: "This day was publish'd by me that part of the Mysterie of Jesuitism translated and collected by me tho' without my name containing the Imaginarie Heresy with 4 letters and other pieces.Evelyn included the book in the list of his works sent to Dr. Plot and though he did not refer to it again in his Diary his interest in the subject remained very active" Keynes John Evelyn pp. 124-126.
