Inscribed 'Coleridge 1900' to the recto of the front free endpapers. A unique set of Poe's works.Bernard Coleridge 2nd Baron Coleridge compiled this work. Coleridge was a lawyer and politician sitting in the House of Commons as a Liberal from 1885 to 1894 when he inherited his peerage. His grandfather John Taylor Coleridge as the nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge compiled this unique set taking the collected works of Poe published by A. & C. Black and binding them in these three volumes with his own hand-drawn and hand-written title pages and contents pages detailing the order in which the works are bound. Coleridge has stated to the title page 'the purpose of this selection is to include only such work as exhibits Poe's rare genius in full measure'. Presumably Coleridge took out the works which he thought did not show Poe's genius and the best of his abilities. This A. & C. Black set was originally bound in four volumes however Coleridge's compiled set is only three volumes. Coleridge has crossed out the original pagination and written in ink his own pagination for each volume. The original A. & C. 18279045<p>This is a rare volume of the publication "The North American Review" 1827 Volume XXV containing a notice for "TAMERLANE AND OTHER POEMS" the first published work of EDGAR ALLAN POE. 1827; Frederick T. Gray; Boston. The volume contains the July No. LVI and October No. LVII issues - the issues are consecutive as they were published quarterly. There is a Contents page for each issue at the front and an Index at the back. Within the "New Publications / Poetry" section of the October issue is a listing for Poe's "Tamerlane and other Poems. By a Bostonian. Boston." "Tamerlane and other Poems" first published in June or July 1827 was virtually ignored and received no significant critical attention upon its publication. No reviews of the book were written and only a few notices are known one being the mention within this volume. Founded in Boston in 1815 by journalist Nathan Hale "The North American Review" was the first literary magazine in the United States. Contemporaneous items associated with Poe's "Tamerlane" are exceedingly scarce and rarely come to market.<br /><br /><br />Condition:<br />The label on the spine has lifted a bit at the right edge. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers resulting in the front cover being a bit shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. Small tears to the leather at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Sharp cover corners. Light dampstaining at the bottom of the pages at the front of the book from the front pastedown to about page 26 and at the back of the book from page 417 to the rear pastedown. The pages in between are clean with no notable issues found. Overall the book is in Good- condition.</p> Frederick T. Gray

Traces of rubbing to edges. Scattered foxing. A good copy. This translation of Poe was published a few months before Baudelaire's first collection of poems Les Fleurs du mal. While we know how much E.A. Poe owes to Baudelaire whose superb translation is known to even surpass the original work we often overlook Baudelaire's own literary debt to his American model. More than an exercise in translation Baudelaire found in reading Poe's extraordinary stories the very soul of his poems which we still being written at the time. Following the success of his first translation of Les Histoires Extraordinaires in 1856 Baudelaire added a unique preface to his Nouvelles histoires extraordinaires which goes far beyond a simple presentation of Edgar Allan Poe's ""dark and strange genius"" and proves to be a true tribute to Poe by his humble translator who was about to become one of the greatest poets in history. ""From the bosom of a greedy world starved of materialities Poe darted into dreams. Smothered as he was by the American atmosphere he wrote at the head of Eureka: ""I offer this book to those who have put their faith in dreams as in the only realities!"" . Poe an Aristocrat by nature even more than by birth a Virginian a Southern man a true Byron lost in a bad world always retained his philosophical impassivity and whether he was defining the nose of the rabble mocking the fabricators of religion or mocking libraries he remains what the true poet was and always will be - a truth dressed in a bizarre way an apparent paradox who doesn't want to be elbowed by the crowd and who runs to the far east when the fireworks go off at sunset."" There is a label affixed near the bottom of the spine. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and clean with only a thin stain along the top edge of the 2 blank end papers at the back.
