Contemporary black morocco with an elaborate decorative design stamped in gold on both boards and spine yellow endpapers all edges gilt. Small early owner name in ink on front free endpaper. Edges of the boards and corners lightly rubbed the title page and engraved plates are foxed a few gatherings slightly sprung good or better. Contains the first printed appearance of Poe’s The Purloined Letter Mabbott text A on pp. 41-61. Also contains the first appearance of “The Poet's Apology†by Emerson and “A Gleam of Sunshine†by Longfellow. Contemporary polished calf with an elaborate decorative design stamped in gold on both boards and spine plain endpapers all edges gilt. Owner inscription in ink on front free endpaper dated Christmas 1844. Later bookplate on front pastedown. Covers are rubbed with wear at the edges of the boards spine is rubbed and faded the engraved plates and tissue guards are foxed very good. Rubbing and wear to the edges of the boards light scattered foxing and some dampstaining to the margins of the final four issues a good or better copy. Contains the first printed appearances of Parts 5 8 and 9 of Marginalia in the March November and December issues Poe published seventeen parts of the Marginalia from 1844-1849 and his essay on writing: The Philosophy of Composition in the April issue. Other noteworthy contributions included in this volume are: “The Builders†by Henry W. Longfellow “To the Past†by J.R. Lowell “Sorrow as on the Sea†by Lydia H. Sigourney and multiple poems by J.
