We are led to suspect what indeed he tells us himself that he discovered the law by some process which he has not shown us and that when he had afterwards built up a pefect demonstration he removed all traces of the scaffolding by which he raised it."The offered memoir was published BEFORE the famous "Theorie mathématique des phénomènes électro-dynamiques uniquement déduite de L'expérience" which did not appear until 1827. That 1827-Memoire incorporates together with a new presentation of Ampère's results from 1820 1822 1823 the offered memoir 1825. Horblit: 100 - Dibner: 62."From 1814 until 1820 Ampére did not perform the kind of research that would have made it into the annals of the histrory of science but on September 11 1820 when he heard Francois Arago speak about Oersted's work he got fresh inspiration and started the work that made him famous. Arago related how Oersted had found that a steady electric current influences the orientation of a compass needle. After a weak Ampère had determined experimentally that that two straight parallel and current-carrying wires execute a force on each other. The magnitude of the force is inversely proportional to the distance between the wires and proportional to the strenghts of the current. During the following years he continued his researches both experimentally and theoretically. he built an instrument for measuring electricity that later was developed into the galvanometer. Finally in 1825 he presented his collected results to the Academy IN ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED MEMOIRS IN THE HISTORY OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY The paper offered." Text block tight and quite nice though original boards quite edgeworn and age toned; inner hinges with old paper spine mend thus tight; calf spine of later vintage with title in gilt. A tight and nice first volume only of the scarce first U.S. edition of this influential economic treatise -- but a fine and unique association copy: Front flyleaf and title page each bear the bold ownership signature of Lewis W. Green 1806-63 a notable Presbyterian minister and educator whose college presidencies include Hampden-Sydney College 9th president 1848-56 Transylvania University 8th president 1856-58 and Centre College 4th president 1858-63. Green entered Centre College Kentucky at the young age of 16 in 1822 -- the very year he signed the title page of this volume adding proudly "Centre College April 1822" beneath. Front flyleaf signature appears to have been added much later. Green appears to have had this copy specially bound instructing the binder to insert a blank leaf after every two text leaves so that he could fill them with his pencilled notes. Many leaves are blank but many others are filled with his neatly pencilled scholarly jottings discussing Say's text -- clearly Green spent much time reading and analyzing this copy. Although this is volume one only of this two-volume set it is an absolutely intriguing and obviously one-of-a-kind copy worthy of further research. Wells and Lilly hardcover

A number of the full page plates actually have 4 images per page. Of the plates 28 of the 30 are hand-colored including the frontis and engraved title page. Two plates are not colored. The text also contains 12 smaller text illustrations in black and white. THE PLATES ARE DIFFERENT THAN THOSE THAT APPEAR IN THE PICART WORK. This work appears to collate complete. A scarce work. Currently we find no other copies online. We have found no published auction records for this work and the earliest edition we find on Worldcat is 1828 listing the authors as Robert L. He Was The Uncle Of Austrian-British Philosopher Karl Popper. Popper-Lynkeus's Ideas Were Innovative For His Time. In Engineering He Thought Of The Possibility Of Electric Power Transmission The Conversion Of Mechanical Energy Of Waterfalls And Rising Tides Into Electrical Power 1862. In Physics He Thought Of The Mass-Energy Relation 1883 And The Idea Of A Quantum Of Energy 1884 The Principle Of Unavoidable Distortion Of The Parameters Of Objects Under Investigation By Measuring Instruments. In Psychology He Thought Of The Interpretations Of Dreams Based On Analysis Of The Conflict Between The Social Consciousness Of An Individual And His Or Her Animal Instincts Short Story Dreaming Like Waking 1889. Several Years Before Theodor Herzl In The Work Prince Bismarck And Anti-Semitism 1886 Popper-Lynkeus Came To The Conclusion That The Jews Could Be Saved From Anti-Semitism Only If They Possessed Their Own State. This Idea Was Included In The Collection Of Philosophical Stories Under The Common Title Fantasies Of A Realist Which Was Published In 1899 And Ran Through Twenty Editions. Since Then Popper-Lynkeus Used The Pseudonym Lynkeus - After The Keen-Sighted Watchman From The Argonauts' Ship Appearing Also In Goethe's Faust. Three Of The Many Ideas Popper-Lynkeus Suggested In This Collection Were: Influence Of Marching Music On The Masses; On The Expediency Of Some Punishments; On The Right Of Every Individual To Exist. Popper-Lynkeus Mentions The Great Power That Music Has Over The Masses. He Stated That Marching Music Often Serves As A Support Of Tyranny Transforming The Masses Into A Paste Anything Can Be Made From.Citation Needed This Idea Of Popper-Lynkeus Is Similar To An Idea Of Leo Tolstoy Who Said "Those Who Want To Have More Slaves Should Compose More Marching Music." In The Sphere Of Justice Popper-Lynkeus Maintained That Publicity Should Be The Main Punishment For Committing A Crime And Only Recidivists Should Be Isolated. According To Popper-Lynkeus The Right To Exist Is The Primary And Natural Right Of Any Human Being And For This Reason The State Should Not Be Allowed To Send An Individual To Death Without His Or Her Consent. He Was An Advocate Of Compulsory Military Service But Provided That Only Volunteers Would Be Sent To Battlefields.Popper-Lynkeus Designed His Own Social System Which Ensures That All Individuals Are Provided With Goods Of Primary Necessity And Explains It In A Series Of Works.
