Signed and dated by Rauschenberg and signed and numbered by Robbe-Grillet on each of the 31 pages each carries the embossed folio number and publisher's seal. Fine condition in original red cloth clamshell box designed by the artist as issued. With two of the original aluminum offset plates on which Robbe-Grillet wrote the text a set of ten proof pages on Twinrocker paper for the text before illustrations and a sheet which Robbe-Grillet used for practice before writing out the manuscript on the plates. The plates were returned to ULAE by Robbe-Grillet and proofed before Rauschenberg responded to each group of text pages by creating his iluustrations. 1935C1031Alain Campbell White letters to Frederick Gamage cover the years from April 4 1935 to September 15 1944. For this ten year period there are 364 dated letters and 28 incomplete letters lacking front date page. The letters are an ongoing correspondence between White and Gamage which covers all aspects of problem chess. The letters show a development of mentor White encouraging ad occasionally prodding his protégé Gamage in developing skills in problem construction. As the letters progress over this ten year period the reader can observe the relationship develop between the two men from a formal intercourse to a more comradely banter. White offered suggestions comments and themes for problems. White's vast and profound technical knowledge his artistic appreciation his ability in expressing himself and his enthusiastic and friendly encouragement were the great inspiration of many problems Gamage constructed and he was lucky enough to be among his host of correspondents. Some of the letters were multiple pages hand typed but often hand written some unsigned or just initialed usually with the location White was residing and the date written. Included with the letters are the limited edition work by Alain White on Gamage Frederick Gamage: An Artist in Chess Problems and Mike Prcic's book Frederick Gamage. The letters in the latter work have been reproduced from the original letters offered now.<br /><br />Newman Guttman was one of a few problemists to visit Frederick Gamage. After the passing of Gamage the letters from Alain White along with Gamage's other chess papers were given to Guttman. He in turn gave these papers to Edgar Holladay. Holladay came into the possession of what problemists would consider as "treasures" one-of-a-kind items from famous and well-known problemists. Robert Moore and Holladay were good friends and these were passed to him by Holladay's wife Rita.<br /><br />Serious buyers may inquire about more information regarding this collection.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />The letters have folds for postage some occasional stains and occasional edge wear else a very good collection. An important catalog of one of the first exhibitions of African American art and apparently the very first to be held in the South. The exhibition was historically significant for its contents and style as well; it was the first to frame Black art as "modern." Over 12000 visitors saw the 116 works by 29 artists including Jacob Lawrence Dox Thrash Samuel Joseph Brown Elton Clay Fax Archibald Motley James Lesesne Wells and Hale Woodruff. As an outspoken critic of religious dogma and a friend of progressive Wisconsin politician Robert LaFollette Otto weathered decades of opprobrium while teaching in Wisconsin. A gay African American philosopher educator and writer Locke is most often remembered as the "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance; his writing on the movement in 1925 including the seminal anthology The New Negro effectively launched it. He was also the first African American Rhodes scholar. This influential anthology introduced many Black modern artists and subjects at a time when few critics were aware of them. Included are responses to a questionnaire and an album of film stills. <br/><br/>Focusing on the filmmakers of the Rive Gauche movement which slightly preceded the French New Wave and ran parallel through the 1960s Van Wert wanted to explore the literary influence on the works of the movement's principle filmmakers an aspect he felt separated them from their "Cahiers" counterparts. He sent the directors a twenty-question survey to which he received four amicable responses from Alain Robbe-Grillet Henri Colpi and Jean Cayrol. <br/><br/>Alain Robbe-Grillet provides a generous response directly on the questionnaire with his comments in blue and red holograph ink throughout. He describes his reactions to contemporary filmmakers how Godard's works were influential but the work of Truffaut and Chabrol were absolutely not and numerically ranking the importance of each aspect of filmmaking such as the editing soundtrack and directing actors and signs his form "bien cordialement / Robbe-Grillet" at the top right corner of the first leaf. <br/><br/>Jean Cayrol responds with a two-leaf typed letter signed. Cayrol who collaborated with Alain Rensais on "Night and Fog" 1955 and "Muriel" 1963 invites Van Wert to tape a conversation in Paris because of an expressed difficulty in easily articulating his ideas in writing. <br/><br/>Henri Colpi responds with a four leaf six page autograph letter signed on his printed stationery some leaves recto and verso some recto only. Colpi was the director of the 1961 Palme d'Or winning "Une aussi longue absence" and writes the most thorough response addressing each of Van Wert's questions in detail. <br/><br/>Included are 142 original 4 x 6 inch vernacular photographs taken during screenings held by Van Wert using prints obtained from Grove New Yorker Films and others. The photos were ostensibly used as visual references by Van Wert while researching the films referenced in his book. Included are photographs from three films: "L'Immortelle" Robbe-Grillet 1963 "L'Opera mouffe" Agnes Varda 1958 and "Night and Fog" Resnais 1955. Collection of five vintage oversize borderless photographs and two contact sheets with 59 images of the Thelonious Monk Quartet in performance at the La Maison de l'ORTF Office de Radiodiffusion-Television Francaise in Paris on February 23 1964. Photographs with the stamp of photographer Alain Dessalles on the verso.<br/><br/>The quartet here includes saxophonist Charlie Rouse bassist Butch Warren and drummer Ben Riley. They would also back Monk on his 1964 album It's Monk's Time the tracks for which were recorded at in January February and March one of five albums Monk would release that year. <br/><br/>According to Robin Kelly's Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original the quartet was in the midst of a 17-stop tour through Europe when these photographs were taken. The images capture the legendary pianist at the height of his creative powers and three days later on February 28 1964 Monk became just the fourth jazz musician to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. <br/><br/>Photographs 8 x 12 inches contact sheets 9 x 12 inches. Additional underlining and bracketing throughout in the same fountain pen ink as the inscription mostly to the opening chapters of the text. <br/><br/>The McCarthy / HUAC witch hunt saw Losey hounded out of the United States in the 1950s and to his great regret he never made another film in his home country. Professionally though it was the making of him as a director: in collaboration with Harold Pinter Losey made a trilogy of legendary British films of the 1960s: "The Servant" "Accident" and "The Go-Between." Pinter and Losey also worked closely together on an adaptation of Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" but although the script was later published the film remained unmade. <br/><br/>Losey shared both a political philosophy and a cinema aesthetic with Alain Resnais and Losey's 1978 film "Roads to the South" is a sequel to Resnais' 1966 film "The War is Over."
