Gil Blas is a picaresque novel by Alain-René Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. It is considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. Written by Alain-René Le Sage 6 May 1668 17 November 1747 a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks his comedy Turcaret and of course this novel. Translated from the original French by Tobias Smollett. "With twelve original etchings by R. de los Rios." Hand numbered 83 of only 100 sets "on laid paper medium 8vo with proof etchings on Japanese paper". Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally generally smart with sunning to spines and light wear to extremities. Dampstaining and light mold to the rear board and final few pages of volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with only occasional instances of spotting. Many pages remain uncut. Publisher's ad at end of v. 4 for a large paper edition of Gil Blas and a matching edition of Don Quixote. Includes a translator's preface and life of the author. ¶ Apparently an unrecorded variant of this Phillips edition as records in OCLC and Copac offer no evidence for any volumes dated 1812 as found here with a cancelled v. 2 title page. --- CONDITION: Contemporary sprinkled brown calf; spines with black leather labels and gold tooling. ¶ Lacking final leaf of v. 4 additional publisher's ad; spines badly rubbed the first two volumes lacking their labels; mild scattered foxing; light dampstaining to last two plates in v. 1; v. 2 frontispiece and title leaf attached by single thread; inky fingerprint on verso of plate facing p. 289 in v. 2. ¶ A robust profusely illustrated set in contemporary bindings. --- PROVENANCE: "D. Illustrations are by French artist Jean Gigoux 1806-1894 whose immensely successful series of several hundred woodcuts for Gil Blas was first published in 1835: this is their first publication in an English edition. The archetypal picaresque novel Gil Blas was first published between 1715 and 1735; its most notable English translation by Tobias Smollett was first published in 1748 and is republished here. Tissue guards present. <br/><br/>Tobias Smollett in the preface to his first novel The Adventures of Roderick Random 1748 acknowledges the influence of Le Sage's L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane on his work. By far the most successful of "useful and entertaining" romances Smollett writes Gil Blas describes "the knavery and foibles of life with infinite humour and sagacity." "The following sheets" he adds significantly "I have modeled on his plan." Smollett's translation of Gil Blas appeared nine months after the publication of Roderick Random. This chronicle of a merry philosophical young man whose adventures lead him into all levels of society from the highest to the lowest presents special problems for a translator. Smollett without always adhering to the literal expression of the novel's language is true to its style spirit and ideas.
