004201Leporello. Card. . Very Good. N.d. circa 1998. Closed 24.5 by 19 cm. 22 panels with artwork stretching to close to 420 cm. Printed but it would appear unpublished leporello reproducing a panoramic watercolor painting depicting the alleged sordid aspects of Catherine the Great's life including it would appear the plotting against her husband and her sexual escapades among them her final equine moments. The episodic painting though is rife with ambiguity and this is not clarified much by the cryptic captions which are deliberately written as if they were code or perhaps Urdu script. A close examination of these captions will allow one to discern an occasional English word. Still we ourselves were unable to decode the captions to make much sense of them; this is a challenge we leave for the later collector. The panorama is highly Orientalist in its sensibility as if it were the creation of a Mongol modernist. While we do not find the artwork beautiful it has a dream-like quality and it is most definitely arresting perhaps disturbingly so. Light soiling. Signed by editor Alain Locke on front free endpaper inscribed to professor of philosophy Max Otto and his wife "in remembrance of happy Madison Wisconsin days. signed with an underscore Alain Locke May 27 1946." A nice association between two prominent American intellectuals. As an outspoken critic of religious dogma and a friend of progressive Wisconsin politician Robert LaFollette Otto weathered decades of opprobrium while teaching in Wisconsin. A gay African American philosopher educator and writer Locke is most often remembered as the "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance; his writing on the movement in 1925 including the seminal anthology The New Negro effectively launched it. He was also the first African American Rhodes scholar. This influential anthology introduced many Black modern artists and subjects at a time when few critics were aware of them. French language draft script for the 1958 film. <br/><br/>Based on the 1777 erotic novel "Point de Lendemain" by Dominique Vivant released in the US as "The Lovers." <br/><br/>Louis Malle's second film about a wealthy woman who becomes bored with both her emotionally distant husband and her lover and abruptly leaves them both to take up with a younger man she just met. After its released in the US the film became the subject of a landmark First Amendment case before the Supreme Court where Justice Potter Stewart in declaring the film not obscene issued the immortal phrase "I know it when I see it" in regards to what constitutes pornographic material. <br/><br/>Set in and shot on location in Paris Dijon Burgundy and the Cote-d'Or all in France. <br/><br/>Tan untitled wrappers.
