The Metaphysics first edition of 1801. <p>The first collected English translations of Aristotle's works from Orphic fragments by Neoplatonist scholar Thomas Tyler 1758-1835. Provenance of famed bibliophile and collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer whose well-curated and respected library expanded to nearly 20000 volumes. Bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin remarked that she was "the head of all female book collectors in Europe." Known for her philanthropic endeavors she donated a sum of 50 pounds to Patrick Bronte father of Charlotte Bronte when he was widowed in 1821. Currer also contributed an unknown amount to the Clergy Daughter's School that the Bronte sisters attended. Scholars postulate that Charlotte chose the non de plume of "Currer Bell" for her first published 1847 novel Jane Eyre in honor of Currer's philanthropy. Boldly signed by Taylor in ink at the end of the first volume. All of the volumes with the bookplate of Frances Mary Richardson Currer 1785-1861 called the "head of all female book collectors in Europe" by T. F. Dibdin. Eight of the ten volumes of the complete translation of Aristotle's works from the original Greek into English. Only 50 sets were printed and today they seldom appear for sale. There are some sets which have 11 volumes. These contain both the first edition of THE METAPHYSICS which Taylor translated in 1801 and printed in the same large quarto format and the second edition of the METAPHYSICS with significant added material revised for "The Works" in 1812. Our set offered contains the 1801 first edition as listed below. Lacking from our set are the volumes titled "The Physics" and "The Treatises on the Heavens etc." The eight volumes present in this set are the following: 1. The Organon. 1807 2. This "philosophical Atlas" was born in 384 B.C. in Stagira an ancient Greek city in the northeastern region of modern Greece. At seventeen Aristotle traveled to Athens to study at Plato's Academy. He remained at the Academy until Plato's death in 348 B.C. In 343 B.C. Aristotle was recruited to tutor King Alexander the III revered as "Alexander the Great" for his formidable conquests throughout Europe and Asia. Later he established his own school The Lyceum which instructed students in a breadth of branches from rhetoric and logic to philosophy and the natural sciences. The Metaphysics is one of the principal works of Aristotle and history's first major work on this fundamental branch of philosophy. Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy which studies existence as such of "being qua being" according to Aristotle. It "identifies the nature of the universe as a whole. It tells men what kind of world they live in and whether there is a supernatural dimension beyond it. It tells men whether they live in a world of solid entities natural laws absolute facts or in a world of illusory fragments unpredictable miracles and ceaseless flux. Graesse 215. Moss 129. Sylburg received praise from both Moss and Dibdin for his scholarship on Aristotle's writings. Aristotle's Politics are sometimes regarded as the natural sequel to his Nicomachean Ethics: once one knows what it is for a human being to flourish one can consider how the laws of human society can best guide and promote said flourishing. Aristotle undertook a massive effort to examine dozens of Greek city-state constitutions and aimed to discern the best and the worst political principles within them. His Politics then stands as a sort of history of Greece and its political structures. The Politics also contains an examination of the theory behind various forms of government: monarchy aristocracy democracy etc. Aristotle's Economics contains a thorough examination of both macro and microeconomics in ancient Greece. The economics of a city-state a kingdom and of an individual's home are all dissected here and the philosophy behind good home and wealth management is discussed at length. Both his Politics and Economics were highly influential on medieval society and pre-1850 publications of these works have become difficult to find in commerce. A touch of rubbing to the extremities. Interiors bright and clean. A near fine set overall. Thomas Twining had produced the first useable English translation of Aristotle's Poetics in 1789. This is the second edition of 1812 edited by his nephew. <br /> <br /> This 2-volume set has an attractive armorial bookplate bearing the name "Hoar" on the front pastedown of each volume. According to a pencilled notation on the rear pastedown of volume I the set was owned by George Frisbie Hoar Abolitionist Radical Republican and Massachusetts senator from 1877-1904. <br /> <br /> A handsome set in its original cloth bindings. Thin. vi pp. followed by 22 autotype plates of the papyrus sheets in real size. This is the second volume of this publication very seldom found. It contains the plate illustrations. There is a note in the preface to the second edition that some of the fragments on plates 19 and 20 have been re-arranged based on newly examined evidence and that some of the negatives for the other plates were redone. Scarce. The translation of these fragments was published with commentary in a smaller separate octavo volume of around 200 pages. Sadly this volume is not included. A Dissertation upon Rhetoric" translated from the Greek of Aristotle by Daniel Michael Crimmin Esq. was published in London by J.J. Stockdale in 1811. This work is a translation of Aristotle's treatise on rhetoric a foundational text in the field. It was likely part of a larger effort to make classical Greek texts accessible to an English-speaking audience. Translator Daniel Michael Crimmin was a scholar with connections to Trinity College Dublin and the Middle Temple. London-based publisher J.J. Stockdale was well known for producing scholarly works. Aristotle's Rhetoric was classified with a few other works notably the Poetics as encheiridia i.e. handbooks providing foundational treatment of a subject essentially practical guides rather than abstract treatises. As such The Rhetoric in particular was widely circulated albeit in Latin and extensively cited. Rhetoric was of course useful in politics and law but it became increasingly embraced by theological educators. Persuasion is by means of the hearers whenever they are led on into passion by the speech for we do not render our judgments the same way when grieved as when delighted or when friendly as when hostile Sachs 2009. The "Dissertation upon Rhetoric" unravels the basic principles of the art of argumentation. Aristotle's Rhetoric is a cornerstone of Western rhetorical theory and this translation by Crimmin made The Rhetoric available to a wider audience in the early 19th century. This First Edition rarely appears in commerce or at auction making it a scarce item. Its absence from recent sales underscores its rarity often a desirable trait for collectors of classical works and early translations. Gilded spine with title in contemporary marbled calf. 180228071<p>This 1802 English edition of the Works of Aristotle printed for the booksellers in London presents an intriguing example of early modern pseudo-Aristotelian literature. While ostensibly a collected edition of Aristotle's major texts the contents instead reflect a blend of philosophical fragments folk science and spurious additions—most notably the inclusion of Problemata physica a work long associated with Aristotle despite scholarly doubts regarding its authorship. The volume also features oddities including contemporary medical references such as commentary on infant deaths attributed to London's air quality clearly outside the purview of any authentic Aristotelian manuscript. This eclecticism typifies the genre of popular "Aristotle" books produced for lay audiences in 18th- and early 19th-century Anglo-American print culture. The copy offered here is complete in its 240 pages bound in period full leather and printed in New England in 1806 despite its London imprint. A fascinating artifact of both classical appropriation and vernacular medical publishing. It appears that this edition was issued with several blank leaves on which the student using the book could take notes. Our copy has copious manuscript notes from the late 1830's on these pages. The student signed his name on the free front endpaper: James Glencross Balliol College 1837. Balliol college was a powerhouse of Greek and Latin language learning with Benjamin Jowett having taught there. This is a fascinating example of nineteenth century ancient language education with copious evidence of how a student would interact with an Aristotelian text.
