Gutes Ex. - ... Mit einer Monographie über den Oppenheimer Pfarrer Johann Gottfried und sein umfangreiches humanistisches Übersetzungswerk, das zwischen 1489 und 1494 entstand, soll ein Beitrag zur weiteren Erforschung des deutschen Humanismus geleistet werden. Als eine Art Mosaikstein soll diese Untersuchung somit dazu dienen, bereits gewonnene Erkenntnisse über diese Epoche zu überprüfen und sie gegebenenfalls zu korrigieren und zu ergänzen. Die Forschung zu Johann Gottfried ist schmal; bislang hat sich lediglich Franz Josef Worstbrock mit Gottfrieds Übersetzungswerk näher auseinandergesetzt. He makes the original argument here that Aristotle separates the notions of necessity and cause, rejecting both the idea that all events are necessarily determined as well as the idea that a non-necessitated event must also be non-caused. In support of this argument, Sorabji engages in a wide-ranging discussion of explanation, time, free will, essence, and purpose in nature. He also provides historical perspective, arguing that these problems remain intimately bound up with modern controversies.

Edgewear to DJ. ; Theophrastus' The Characters consists of brief, vigorous and trenchant delineations of moral types, which contain a most valuable picture of the life of his time. They form the first recorded attempt at systematic character writing. The book has been regarded by some as an independent work; others incline to the view that the sketches were written from time to time by Theophrastus, and collected and edited after his death; others, again, regard the Characters as part of a larger systematic work, but the style of the book is against this. Theophrastus has found many imitators in this kind of writing, notably Hall (1608) , Sir Thomas Overbury (1614–16) , Bishop Earle (1628) and Jean de La Bruyère (1688) , who also translated the Characters. ; 153 pages
