An eighteenth century edition of this important and controversial work on sex childbirth and pregnancy considered to be the first English sex manual and written anonymously under the guise of being a work of the famed philosopher Aristotle. A new edition of this important work. In a contemporary calf binding retaining original endpapers. An eighteenth century edition of this important midwifery work and early sex manual. The work was falsely attributed to the celebrated philosopher Aristotle though the work was written anonymously by a Pseudo-Aristotle due to the nature of the work and often considered to be the work of Doctor William Salmon. This volume contains four parts with the first part being 'Aristotle's Complete Master-piece' the popular and controversial sexual guide often considered to be the first English sex manual. The work discusses the benefits of mutual sexual pleasure and the enjoyment of intercourse stating the importance of women's pleasure for successful procreation. These ideas were unusual for the time period and the book was supposedly banned due to the explicit nature of the work though this has not been proven. The rest of the work is a midwifery book discussing fertility pregnancy and childbirth including a discussion about virginity stating that virginity cannot be determined by the state of a women's hymen a statement very ahead of its time. In contemporary full calf retaining the original endpapers. Externally joints cracked tender to the rear with slight rubbing to the extremities and joints marks to the boards and slight loss to the head of the spine. Marks to the rear endpapers. The other is that women whose husbands have been long absent do after copulation with them again conceive very quickly" / "Women ought to take great care that their imagination be pure and dear that their child may be well formed". The book also discusses causes and cure of Barrenenss Of the Hot Distempers of the Womb The Diseases of the Womb Palmistry shewing the various judgments drawn from the hand includes a choice of remedies for the several distempers to the human body Crabs Herpes Hysteria etc. Aristotle's Masterpiece also known as The Works of Aristotle the Famous Philosopher is a sex manual and a midwifery book that was popular in England from the early modern period through to the 19th century. It was first published in 1684 and written by an unknown author who falsely claimed to be Aristotle. As a consequence the author is now described as a Pseudo-Aristotle the collective name for unidentified authors who masqueraded as Aristotle. The title of the work was possibly chosen because Aristotle was seen as a sex expert in early modern England. Another popular pseudo-Aristotelian text which covered sex and reproduction Aristotle's Problems 1595 had been responsible for this reputation. The real Aristotle had also written works about the reproduction of animals such as History of Animals and Generation of Animals and was considered an authority on scientific matters in general. hardcover
