Questo saggio è un tentativo di riscrittura in chiave attualizzante del testo classico del Rinascimento europeo, Elogio della follia, di Erasmo da Rotterdam, che è una brillante descrizione di ruoli e comportamenti ispirati dalla Follia, osservandone soprattutto i vantaggi della sua azione sui differenti campi da gioco della vita. Ne consegue un rovesciamento parodistico di condotte di vita che, a un esame approfondito, si rivelano vuoti mascheramenti e scimmiottamenti del buon vivere, capsule d'idiozia incarnate da fantocci in cui si riflette l'assenza della ragione. In effetti, il caleidoscopio di figure e situazioni che si rincorrono nel testo erasmiano sono una sorta di campo di sperimentazione in cui ognuno può vedere riflessa la propria follia e, prendendone atto, volgersi alla via della saggezza. L'intera narrazione ha comunque il sapore dell'ironia e dell'autoironia, che è quel distacco dell'anima che unicamente può alleviare il peso dell'esistenza, la via aurea su cui si annuncia il cammino stesso della ragione, della quale alla fine il testo costituisce un vero inno, perché propriamente non c'è ragione senza ironia.
