"Coronis apologetica pro colloquiis Erasmi ex ipsius scriptis . . . fideliter collecta à Petro Scriverio. Accedit ejusdem de colloquiorum utilitate dissertatio" on 44 pages at end. Last two leaves blank. Front fixed endpaper bears armorial bookplate of Thomas Preston with the motto "Lucem Spero Clariorem" upper part of the bookplate is partially obscured by the removal of some former label. In Good Condition: edges rubbed; leather separated along joints but stitching solid; lacking leather at head of spine; trimmed with a few heads shaved close; initials at foot of title page in an old hand; otherwise pages are clean and tight. Title engraved by Corn. Cl. Duysend it depicts a standing Erasmus who looks through a telescope into a clouded sky; from a cloud comes the hand of God that bears the 'globus cruciger' corss-bearing orb in German Reichsapfel; the globe represents the earth and he who holds the globe owns the world. The motto on the title suits Erasmus: 'Vidit pervidit risit'. This engraved title was already used by Elsevier for the edition of the Colloquia of 1636. On the last of the preliminary pages a woodcut illustration depicting both sides of a medal of Erasmus on the recto his portrait on the verso his motto: 'Concedo nulli'; around it the legend with Erasmus' interpretation of his motto: 'Mors ultima linea rerum' Condition: Vellum age-tanned and somewhat soiled Note: 'The Colloquia like the Adagia were written over a period of years and constantly enlarged as edition succeeded edition. From their earliest form of short models of Latin conversation and formulae of etiquette composed at Paris in 1497 for the use of some pupils and first printed in 1518 they grew into 'a rich and motley collection of dialogues each a master piece of literary form well-knit spontaneous convincing unsurpassed in lightness vivacity and fluent Latin each one a finished one-act play' Huizinga. The Colloquia full of witty and penetrating observations on ordinary day-to-day happenings as well as on the basic weakness of Church and society are an invaluable mine of information about 16th century customs institutions and social problems. In fair condition aged and worn with Middleton's seal cut away from the second leaf without any loss to text and a number of closed tears along creases. Seventy lines of neatly-written text. A letter filled with pious sentiment beginning: 'Mr. Squire favored us To-day with a Call and it gave us a peculiar Pleasure to see that he is so well recovered from that Fit of Illness in which my Brother & I saw him notwithstanding the uncommonly severe Winter we have since had. But at the same Time I observed Mr. S. lookt so well I thought I discovered great Anxiety in his Face; which led me without knowing the Particulars of the Court's Decision against his Suit in Law to presume on offering a few Hints for his Consideration with a View to reconcile his Mind to the Divine Providence upon a Supposition of the worst. Duty & the Use of Means are our's; but the Event is GOD's.' Exhortation and anecdote follows with Middleton writing midway through the letter: 'I hope Mrs. Squire will have Grace to exercise a good Understanding with which She is so eminently blessed in reasoning scriptorally & consequently wisely upon the present as well as all other the Vicissitudes of this mortal Life; remembering that there is a Design & a Voice in every Affliction we meet with. Later full calf; gilt lined flat spine with label; front hinge starting from top; wear to edges and corners; marbled endpapers; title page backed; pages closely trimmed with some loss. Willems: "Il y a deux editions differents sous cette date. On reconnaitra la plus jotie des deux a la p. 269 cotee par erreur 169; dan la seconde la p. 285 est chiffree 185." This copy has neither error. However "Les Elzevier d'Amsterdam ont donne trois autres editions de ces Colliques meme format et meme pagination en 1662 1668 et 1677." Given the loss at the beginning of this volume it is possible that a 1650 title page could have been attached to another edition. Unfortunately this copy also has a 3 pp. index not 2 pp. as Willems states existed in the four editions with this pagination. While Willems may have erred in regard to the index there are only a few lines of print on the third page it cannot be stated with certainty which edition the text of this copy is from. Hard Cover.
