The great Christian humanist scholar and teacher evolved the Colloquies as a collection of dialogues on a wide variety of subjects. They began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for Erasmus' own pupils. Full vellum binding with decorative blind stamped cover. Illustration on title page. Triple column pages. 669pp. Vellum is darkly stained with some tears and scratches. Half of the spine is missing another quarter is detaching. Front and back joints starting but covers are holding strong. Foxing within. A portion of pages have some minor dampstains doesn't affect text. Other than a few small letters on the title page the book is free from any writing inside. Good only. Full refund if not satisfied. At the back of this book is the essay by Erasmus De ratione studii pp. 161-198.<br /> <br /> William R. Whittingham 1805-1879 graduated the General Theological Seminary in 1825 and was named librarian of the newly founded school. He later accepted a position on the faculty in 1836. Whittingham was consecrated the fourth Bishop of Maryland in 1840 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Whittingham's important theological library became the core of the Maryland Diocese library which was in turn transferred to the General Theological Seminary. The ownership signature of Bishop Whittingham is dated 1879 a very late acquisition for him. Provenance: William R. A fetching little volume indeed and quite scarcely available to the trade; O.C.L.C. locates only one copy in America at U.C.L.A. one copy in Canada and two copies in The Netherlands. Only a single volume is currently available on-line. Bound quite handsomely in contemporary full vellum binding with gilt design and gilt lettering on the spine stamped into a burgundy leather label. Half-inch split to front joint at bottom else remarkably stiff and sturdy. Colonia is the stated place of publication but other sources say Venice. 206 pp. First Edition in Italian of the most famous work of Erasmus of Rotterdam. This work was translated probably by Raffale Pastore known as a translator of various Greek and Latin classics. The book feels marvelous in the hand. No publisher listed.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes and for sets. hardcover
