1650GD04390ogAmstelodami: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium 1650. Amstelodami: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium 1650 24mo 8 pp. including engraved title page; 589 pp. text lacking pp. 1-12; 3 pp. index. Later full calf; gilt lined flat spine with label; front hinge starting from top; wear to edges and corners; marbled endpapers; title page backed; pages closely trimmed with some loss. Willems: "Il y a deux editions differents sous cette date. On reconnaitra la plus jotie des deux a la p. 269 cotee par erreur 169; dan la seconde la p. 285 est chiffree 185." This copy has neither error. However "Les Elzevier d'Amsterdam ont donne trois autres editions de ces Colliques meme format et meme pagination en 1662 1668 et 1677." Given the loss at the beginning of this volume it is possible that a 1650 title page could have been attached to another edition. Unfortunately this copy also has a 3 pp. index not 2 pp. as Willems states existed in the four editions with this pagination. While Willems may have erred in regard to the index there are only a few lines of print on the third page it cannot be stated with certainty which edition the text of this copy is from. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Amstelodami: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium Hardcover

'Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases sentences and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben Basel 1518. It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin and their deportment soon became a work of literature for adults although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition March 1533 had about sixty parts most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political religious social and literary topics presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve.' -- Craig Thompson introduction to the Colloquies volume of Erasmus's Collected Works.
