Original tree-calf boards with more recent spine and very neat repairs to corners. Prov: John Edmonds Stock 1774 - 1835 with his signature dated 1796 and his neat marginal annotations to aid navigation throughout volume I. More recent ownership insc. to both volumes. Scarce first edition. The first consistent all-embracing hypothesis of evolution. A fascinating provenance. John Edmonds Stock Erasmus Darwin 1731-1802 and Thomas Beddoes 1760-1808 were contemporaries of each other. Erasmus Darwin and Thomas Beddoes developed a friendship and working relationship. Indeed Darwin praised and referenced the work of Beddoes in Zoonomia. Stock and Beddoes worked together this in part led to Stock being asked to write the Memoirs of the Life of Thomas Beddoes Pub. 1811. King-Hele 1963 wrote that Darwin was unjustly attacked by reactionaries. Stock came to Darwins aid as a staunch supporter of his ideas.
