Front page features collage of photos of signs sheriff deputy with gas mask on and long-haired kid climbing a pole sporting People's Park sign. Headline: "Local law enforcement officers shotgunned dozens of Berkeley citizens." Contemporary partisan reporting and editorializing in defense of the local struggle for People's Park a vacant parcel of land in Berkeley on which the University proposed to build a soccer field. Centerspread is large poster depicting protesters erecting a small tree ala the iconic photo of Marines erected the American flag on Iwo Jima. An excellent near fine copy without the discolouration and mottling so often seen with H & S blue cloth first editions of this period with clean contents and no previous owner's inscriptions. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine as called for. The D/W is a bright and attractive example with a touch of fraying at the spine tips but with no loss. The rear flap is blind-stamped: The Circulating Library Harrods Ltd SW1. The rear flap is creased with minor chipping and with a couple of closed tears. One of the rarest Berkeley first editions from the 1930's in our experience. A charming descriptive volume on the daily outdoors life of Parisians at the turn of the century with illustrations. First edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding.With a coloured watercolour frontispiece and many monochrome plates and vignettes illustrated by the author and other artists. This book vividly depicts the various outdoor activities and sights one can find Parisians doing at the turn of the century told largely through the author's own anecdotes and observations. With four leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. F. Berkeley Smith often explored Parisians and French culture in the early 20th century particularly Bohemian Paris with his other works including 'How Paris Amuses Itself' and 'The Real Latin Quarter'. In the original cloth binding with tipped-in illustration to the front board. Externally very smart with mild rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Slight fading to the spine cloth. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a small tide mark affecting the top corner of the first few leaves. Original poster for one of the most important events in the Bay Area of California in 1970 a performance by Steve Reich to celebrate the opening of the UC Berkeley Art Museum. With a striking triangular design mounted as issued with a label on the verso crediting the Richell Gallery of Houston Texas for the archival framing. <br/><br/>The museum was founded in 1963 after a donation was made to the university from artist and teacher Hans Hofmann of forty-five paintings plus $250000. A competition to design the building was announced in 1964 and the museum opened in 1970. In 1966 the Pacific Film Archive was founded and began screenings in 1966. Today the museum continues to be a great success and operates under the name of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive or BAM/PFA. <br/><br/>The performance for the opening included four early works by Reich: "Four Organs" "My Name Is" "Piano Phase" and "Phase Patterns." The event marked an important moment in San Francisco Bay Area new music history with the triumphant return to the East Bay by Reich who studied at Mills College with Luciano Berio and who performed the 1964 world premiere of Terry Riley's now-legendary work "In C" at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. <br/><br/>Three sided poster each side measuring 26.3 inches mounted as issued.
