By Daniel Berkeley Updike an American printer and historian of typography. He trained as a printer at the Riverside Press of Houghton Mifflin & Company and later moved to typographic design. He founded the Merrymount Press in 1896. Densely illustrated throughout the texts with various examples of fonts and typefaces. Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedowns from the library of Michael Scot. In the original publisher's cloth bindings and clipped dust wrappers. Externally very smart. There is some light bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and light marks to the front board of Volume I. The dust wrappers have some slight wear to the extremities with some small tears creases and light spots. There is an inch-long closed tear to the front of the dust wrapper of Volume II. A detailed and comprehensive history of typography based on a series of lectures delivered as part of a course on the Technique of Printing in the Graduate School of Business Administration of Harvard University between 1911 and 1916. With commentary on the invention of printing the Latin alphabet and its development types of different countries during the fifteenth century the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries and much more. Written by Daniel Berkeley Updike an American printer and historian of typography. Previously held in the library of Gerald E. Cinamon an American book designer who was Penguin Books" main designer of arts and architecture titles becoming its chief designer in the mid-1970s. He was considered one of the most skilled designers of his generation. With a letter from Michael Denton of Denton Antiques London thanking Cinamon for the lending of this set. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines with the odd mark to the boards. Internally firmly bound.
