186718050301Boston: Lee and Shepard 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Nast Thomas. Duodecimo size 299 pp. The popular work of ironic fiction written by journalist and political commentator David Ross Locke 1833-1888. Locke's greatest influence was through his satirical writings as "Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby". The Nasby letters harshly ridiculed the plight of peoples in the Confederate states and the complicity of Northern politicians. Both Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant recognized Nasby as a significant source of support for their presidencies.

Thomas Nast 1840-1902 eventually heightened the work with his illustrations and was also credited by Lincoln for inspiring people to support the war effort. His work marked an important shift in shift in political cartoons which had before relied mainly on text rather than imagery. "Swinging Round the Cirkle" is made up of some of the most weighted of Nasby's moral statements especially concerning the plight of African Americans. The letters were composed in response to a comment by Andrew Johnson on an "uninspired" tour of the country.

___DESCRIPTION: Original pebbled green cloth with blind-stamped panels to both boards and gilt decorations on backstrip frontis and seven additional plates with captions; duodecimo size 7 5/8" by 5 1/8" 1-4 5-299 pp. first edition.

___CONDITION: A very good copy; covers clean other than a few minor spots on the back board a strong text block with solid hinges complete with all plates the only prior owner marking being a very small plate to the front free endpaper; minor rubbing to edges and corners foxing throughout though plates are still bright; overall a very good copy.

___CITATION: BAL 11820.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The wood-engravings which appear here for the first time have been attributed to William Mason said to be the first wood engraver in Philadelphia; one signed 'G' on p. 32 is thought to be the work of Mason's student George Gilbert. 18181710Philadephia: For the author 1818. Pamphlet octavo 63 pages. Sixth improved edition and the first illustrated edition. With an engraved frontispiece possibly by William Charles depicting a drunken rider felled by a low hanging branch. With thirteen woodcuts in the text by William Mason. The rare wrapper here with the front panel present only contains yet another woodcut likely also by Mason. A temperance tract by the famous Parson Weems inventor of the George Washington cherry tree incident. A series of well written cautionary tales often quite humorous. "As the wan countenance of the lust-worn harlot becomes still more dark and dismal at the sight of a young female fresh and blushing in all the charms of virgin innocence so does the soul of a filthy drunkard experience a quickened hell at the site of a gentleman well drest and breathing the cheerful air of cleanliness and sobriety." The pamphlet is worn with a small one-eighth inch hole in the engraved frontispiece and one page torn through the text due to a careless page separation. The illustrated wrapper panel is worn but the text and illustrations are unscathed. In all a decent survival. Shaw & Shoemaker 46749 MWA PPL; Hamilton 1019; Sabin 102467; American Imprints 46751. The rise and fall of British Empiricism is philosophy's most dramatic example of pushing premises to their logical--and fatal--conclusions. Born in 1690 with the appearance of Locke's Essay Empiricism flourished as the reigning school until 1739 when Hume's Treatise strangled it with its own cinctures after a period of Berkeley's optimistic idealism. The Empiricists collects the key writings on this important philosophy perfect for those interested in learning about this movement with just one book. Anchor Books paperback books

First edition. A short fantastic allegory about the gift of life. Overworked successful but spiritually dead English barrister wins a bet with an itinerant musician and awakes in France as a vital younger man with a caravan and peddler's license. After several days spent analyzing his past life "the dawn found him with the shinning eyes of one awakened to Life's promise jogging southward on an irrevocable way never in this life to retrace his steps." 1963146288N.p.: The Landau Company 1963. Draft script for the 1968 film.

As early as 1950 there was talk of adapting Carson McCullers' 1940 debut novel "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" for the screen. In 1963 producer David Susskind took over Jose Quintero's attempt at adapting the novel which began two years earlier with a script from British screenwriter Gavin Lambert. Susskind passed on Lambert's script opting for a script from Thomas C. Ryan.

Susskind planned to shoot the film in New York City with director Sidney Lumet but the project ended up being held up indefinitely. Four years later Marc Merson's Brownstone Productions had taken over the film rights with Thomas C. Ryan's original 1963 script and with Ryan co-producing. During filming Ryan and director Robert Ellis Miller would make extensive re-writes as they went.

One of the great film adaptations of any American novel starring Sondra Locke in her debut film opposite Alan Arkin. Although much of the political aspect of McCullers' novel was removed from the film the themes present in the author's work are readily apparent: race loneliness impoverishment and anger. Arkin and Locke were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscars.

Set in in a small Southern town shot on location in Selma Alabama.

Red titled vinyl Hart Stenographic Bureau wrappers.
