Self-styled seventh edition. General Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox" was one of the leading American commanders in the Revolution in the South. His brillant operations in the Carolinas kept thousands of British troops tied down and contributed immensely to ultimate American victory. Plain and unassuming he was widely beloved by his contemporaries and after his death this book began the process of his ascent to legend. Horry his second-in-command for part of the war supplied many of the facts although he was allegedly disgusted by Weems' flowery passages and disclaimed any connection with the book. What he disliked others embraced and the book went through many editions. This edition not in Howes or any other standard sources. <br> <br> This copy with the ownership signature and bookplate of J.K. Paulding on titlepage and front pastedown. He is believed to be the inspiration for both the Enlightenment and the Constitution of the United States. Fortescue from the author." First edition of the first full-scale separately published life of John Locke also containing the first publication of any portion of Locke's manuscript papers all of which were bequeathed to Locke's heirs. Edgar Allan Poe's comment on the Moon Hoax is appended. A reprint of Locke's successful hoax perpetrated in the New York Sun in August 1835 that pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the moon. The revelations supposedly reprinted from the actually defunct Edinburgh Journal of Science pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the moon and were so cleverly wrought that for a short time the report was given credence in scientific circles in the United States and Europe. The report was soon denounced as a hoax by the public press and Richard Adams Locke 1800-1871 a reporter for the Sun was identified as the perpetrator of the "ingenious astronomical hoax." Interest in the lunar discoveries increased the Sun's circulation to more than nineteen thousand the largest of any daily of that time. According to William Gowans who reprinted the story in 1859 Locke's account created such public interest that the owners of the Sun published sixty thousand copies of it in pamphlet form. The pamphlet was published in September 1835 and every copy was sold in less than a month. Nevertheless the 1835 printings are rare and only a handful of copies survive. Anatomy of Wonder 1981 1-137. A nice association between two prominent American intellectuals. As an outspoken critic of religious dogma and a friend of progressive Wisconsin politician Robert LaFollette Otto weathered decades of opprobrium while teaching in Wisconsin. A gay African American philosopher educator and writer Locke is most often remembered as the "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance; his writing on the movement in 1925 including the seminal anthology The New Negro effectively launched it. He was also the first African American Rhodes scholar. This influential anthology introduced many Black modern artists and subjects at a time when few critics were aware of them.
