This volume is the fruit of many decades of composing with the prior publication of Ellis's work being in 1912. Comprised on eighty-seven lyrical poems including 'The Happy Islands' 'The Ship of Fame' and 'When the Sun Sets'. With an introduction by fellow poet and writer Walter de la Mare. In the publisher's original red cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart with minor bumping to the extremities and the occasional mark. Odd spot to endpapers. Dust wrapper is smart with light edge wear and the odd mark. Darkening to the spine of the wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with a touch of age toning. A 28 line letter written to poet and solictior Jack Haines. The letter is candid and affectionate and relates to 'the labour of love' involved in writing the introduction to Vivian Locke Ellis's 'Collected Lyrical Poems'. He says that the Ellis poem 'Go nor Aquaint the rose' continues to 'bloom' in him and goes on to talk about the first time he met Locke Ellis. He also mentions other poets and mutual friends- Jack Squire Bernard Hockley - and laments the dying of so many friends. Comes with a copy of the 'Collected Lyrical Poems' by Vivian Locke Ellis published by Faber in 1946. There is also a hand-written postcard card by Locke Ellis giving directions to Jack Haines telling him of the trains- and times of the trains- that he needs to catch to visit him. Book is very good and very bright. The wrapper is near very good with edges rubbed and nicked. Small loss to wrapper spine. A few odd closed tears to edges. More images can be taken upon request. One of two-hundred unnumbered copies of this first draft printed.In his introduction George Locke explains that 'in the last decade of the twentieth century I acquired a substantial quantity of manuscripts and other archival material relating to' Wandrei including the pencil manuscript for the first draft of the short story 'Colossus' which initially appeared in 'Astounding Stories' in the 1930s.This draft differs significantly from the work as it was eventually published and so Locke printed two-hundred copies of this very scarce 'first draft'.A very scarce work.
