Interior pages are also in good condition despite the light foxing and age wear present on some pages. The binding has been carefully repaired but the rear hinge is still cracked. B&W drawing of Locke opposite title page. Includes a complete catalogue of Bohn's libraries from 1882 as well as a list of standard works published by George Bell and Sons from 1880. This scarce 1883 copy was owned by American journalist writer and diplomat Edwin Lefevre. Inscription by Lefevre reads: "The works of the most wonderful man that ever lived. Read reflect and you will not understand metaphysics enough to understand the greatness of Locke." Lefevre's name is stamped and signed in several places throughout. Clean copy. John Locke is regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and the Father of Classical Liberalism. This is the first edition of the first collected edition of his work and the earliest to put his name to "Two Treatises on Government" as well as the letters on "Toleration"and "The Reasonableness of Christianity".
